When Canadian carpenter James Stroud arrived in Sydney as a backpacker 14 years ago Brisbane was not on his radar.? The day he landed he met his wife Julianne, a design draftsperson from Dubbo, NSW. After travelling through Australia?s outback, James moved to Sydney to join her.
Starting work as a carpenter, James soon turned himself into a Manager. ?I hired a team of carpenters to work with me?.
?The last job I did was in La Senza in Westfield?s at Bondi Junction. The prime contractor from Brisbane offered me a contract in Kalbar?, he said.
Reluctantly, James made the decision to leave the city lifestyle to work in a country town he?d never heard of. ? We built the doctors clinic there. We took this old Queenslander and build the clinic underneath it. We took great pains to make sure the new building looked like the top.?
The care and attention to detail quickly paid off. ?? We got a lot of offers of work when we were there and that?s how we ended up in here.?
His foray into building was through a franchise with building giant G.J. Gardner Homes. As the youngest and least experienced franchisee in the group he also quickly became one of the most successful.
Seven years later, what is now Stroud Homes is turning over around $10 Million a year and growing. As well as their office in Jimboomba, they have one in Boonah and plans to open in Fernvale next year.
James believes communication is what sets his business apart from the rest. ?We want our customers to relax and enjoy creating ?their own special home.?
His style is very different from many builders. He is obsessed with making the building experience on of ease and joy, not frustration and angst. He never questions the customers right to question him and spends hours developing ways to improve his processes and service.
