Elizabeth Edwards FINALLY gets a gravestone 19 months after she died of cancer

Elizabeth Edwards finally has a gravestone, 19 months after she died of cancer. Until now, only a small printed card showed the final resting place of the wife of two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards.

Elizabeth's siblings chipped in last month to pay for a modest marble foot stone to mark her grave at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, North Carolina.

It was revealed in June that Elizabeth, who developed a national following after writing books about her battle with cancer and her husband's humiliating affair with Rielle Hunter, lacked a formal gravestone.

Remembered: Supporters of Elizabeth, seen here in three months before her death, were upset she still didn't have a grave stone

It is unknown whether John Edwards had any role in the appearance of Elizabeth's grave site. The couple was still married, but estranged when Elizabeth died in December 2010 at age 61.

Well wishers who came to visit her grave were concerned that a woman of national stature would spend eternity in anonymity.

Her grave site was dwarfed by her son's 14-ton marble sculpture that she and John Edwards commissioned when he died in a car crash in 1996 at age 16.

Family members say they have hired the same sculptor, Robert Mihaly, to create a similarly large monument for Elizabeth that will be her permanent grave marker.

Estranged: Elizabeth was still married to John Edwards when she died, though they were separated. It is unknown whether he played any role in her grave marker

Rielle Hunter

Attacker: Rielle Hunter has attacked Elizabeth in her new book, calling her a 'witch on wheels'

However, it is unknown what has taken so long for the work to be completed.

Until then, the new gravestone will mark Elizabeth's burial site.

It is a simple footstone that bears lyrics from the Leonard Cohen song 'Anthem.'

'Ring the bells that still can ring/ Forget your perfect offering/ There is a crack in everything/ That's how the light gets in,' the lyric goes.

Elizabeth had the same words painted on her kitchen wall shortly before her death.

She developed a following of devoted supporters after her public battles with breast cancer and the solemn public image she cultivated after news broke of her husband's affair.

Elizabeth, a mother of four, has drawn sympathy anew after Hunter published a tell-all memoir in which she defended John Edwards' affair and attacked his deceased wife.

Hunter called Elizabeth a 'witch on wheels' and claimed her controlling behavior drove Edwards into the arms of other women.
