Tiny Tokelau to be world's first solar-powered country

14 hrs.

A project to convert the tiny island nation of Tokelau to all solar power is nearing fruition, as workers finish the first of three major panel arrays. Once activated, the installations should provide more than 90 percent of the power used by the islands' 1,711 residents.

Tokelau is a remote nation northeast of New Zealand?comprising three atolls, to which goods and passengers can only travel by boat. Their electricity needs, though modest, are met by burning diesel fuel in generators. The transportation of the nearly 2,000 barrels of fuel consumed each year costs the population around a million dollars ? a heavy toll.

The three solar arrays will generate about a megawatt in total, and batteries will keep the lights on at times when Tokelau's citizens previously could not afford to run generators. They are designed to withstand the humid and windy tropical environment, and actually produce a surplus of power, meaning the population can expand without taxing the system.

"We would expect this system to repay itself in five years, and?have?a 20-year project life before it needs any sort of significant maintenance," the director of Powersmart, the company that built the arrays, told 3 News in New Zealand.

The roughly nine million New Zealand dollars (around $7.3 million US) needed to plan and?build the installations was taken out in loans from the New Zealand government and contributed by the U.N. Development Programme.

When the installations are switched on in September, fossil fuels will only be necessary?for the three cars maintained by the country. Other countries and territories in the area, motivated by high fuel costs, plentiful sun, and relatively small populations, are also working on going all-renewable. Tuvalu, Samoa, and the Cook Islands may soon be the second, third, and fourth countries to rely almost entirely on solar power.

Nico

It?s no secret that I?m a cutie. People tell me that all the time. I?m a regal, confident kitty who knows what she wants, and that?s lots of love and attention! I also enjoy ?me time,? so I?m looking for a quieter, older family who will allow me to be the calm and relaxed feline that I am. I love to play with toys, and I?m very used to being around other cats, as long as they know I run the show! If you were to take me home, just like with any typical two-year-old, I hope you?ll be patient with me. I?ll take a little time adjusting to new surroundings and will respond best to slow movements. If you give me the chance to settle in I know you?ll see that I?m the best cat for you! Like all the pets at HSFN I am spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all vaccines.

Cheyenne

I?m your typical boxer who loves to play, run around, and go, go, go! I need someone who is willing to be as active as I am and who would want to work with me on training. I will be a great companion for doing all sorts of fun activities like hiking, running, and exploring! I?m a confident and independent pup who loves to play and be silly with other dogs, too. I take finding my new home very seriously, so after thinking about it for a while, I feel that I would fit best in a home with members that are in their teens or older. I know I would be a fun and exciting addition to your family, so don?t miss out on your chance to meet me! And don?t forget, all new adopters receive a free first vet visit to your choice of 16 area vets.

Jalapeno Compressed Watermelon Salad Recipe and a Quick ...

I love a good watermelon salad, especially for summer dinner parties.? Not only are they juicy and refreshing, they?re also economical and easy to throw together.

The obvious challenge of serving watermelon is that it?s watery.? If I served the watermelon as-is on a plate, it?ll get weepy and dilute the other flavours.? I tried compressing watermelon by putting a slab of it on a clean towel and putting weight on top.? That worked ok and will suffice for this recipe.? Recently, I discovered a better technique.

Jalapeno compressed watermelon salad recipe with avocado, feta, capers, red onion, and fresh mint

Using our FoodSaver vacuum sealer that we regularly use alongside our sous vide machine, I vacuum sealed the watermelon to draw out the juices.? A chef friend explained that vacuum sealing opens food?s ?pores?.? That may explain why meats tend to suck up marinates better after sealing.? To take advantage of that effect, I added jalapeno slices to infuse heat and aroma into the watermelon.

If you?ve ever vacuum sealed food with liquid before, you?ll know how annoying it is.? As the juices are pulled out of the bag, it prevents the heat seal from adhering.? I learned that if I put a paper towel near the bag?s opening before sealing, it?ll soak up any excess liquid and allow the bag to seal properly.

After experimenting with several combinations, my friends agree that I?ve nailed it on this one.? Avocado slices contributes butteriness while the feta and capers adds complex brininess.? The?piquant red onion and fresh mint leaves brightens whole salad.? A drizzle of good olive oil and a sprinkle of coarse sea salt ties the unconventional flavours together.

If you don?t have time or the equipment to compress the watermelon, weighing it down for an hour as mentioned above helps a lot.

As a bonus, here?s a super quick and painless appetizer idea.? I actually threw this together as an post-work snack so it?s not the prettiest but it sure was delicious.? Layer a jalapeno slices, basil leaves, and mozzarella cheese onto watermelon cubes.? Sprinkle with pink salt and enjoy.

Quick and painless watermelon appetizer with jalapeno, basil, and mozzarella

Jalapeno compressed watermelon salad

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 watermelon
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, sliced
  • 1/2 red onion, sliced thinly
  • 1 avocado
  • 1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1/3 cup capers, drained
  • 1 bunch mint leaves
  • 1/3 cup good olive oil
  • coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions

  1. Remove the watermelon\'s and cut the flesh into 1 inch slabs. A 8X8 inch slab should be enough for each person. It is fine to have smaller slabs.
  2. Place the slabs into several vacuum seal bags. Do not overlap. Spread the jalapeno slices over the watermelon. Roll up a sheet or 2 of paper towel and place it into each bag. Vacuum seal the watermelon. The paper towel should soak up much of the juice.
  3. Place the bags into the fridge for an hour. Now is a good time to chill 4 salad plates too.
  4. To assemble, cut the bags open and discard the jalapeno slices. Cut the watermelon into the desired size and shape. I usually cut them into squares but it is up to you.
  5. Divide the compressed watermelon slices among 4 salad plates. Divide and top with the red onion, avocado slices, feta cheese and capers.
  6. Drizzle on the olive oil, season with sea salt and pepper. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve.

Selection interviews are important. You should do these each day, it doesn't matter what you understand. Pay out particular awareness of what are the employer wants relating to level of experience. You will notice that many companies will explain when it is a great entry-level or lower experience-based place. These types of three business job interview suggestions are the type you need to know for success.

Proper preparing starts with becoming prepared for any kind of feasible query that you might be asked within a enterprise meeting. In the current economy, levels of competition are going to be fierce, which means you have to be effectively prepared. You should tell individuals why you are the very best particular person to do the job and also take note of all you may with regards to you in this area. If you have experience, after that take note of how your experience will benefit your potential company. Because you know the placement you might be meeting with regarding, consider the career explanation and also justify the reasons you can perform it the very best. When you do this, you will subsequently be better suited to solution any sexual queries within the best way. Develop you might be taking pleasure in reading by what may be fresh suggestions for your own advertising promotions, therefore be sure to you should consider the possibilities. But this kind of merely dates back to the concept of tests because also owning an open up brain to test something, if only when, will be the smart move to make. If you have proven go to those guys in your enterprise, then exactly how would which go to suit your needs? Presently there really isn't any alternative to strong groundwork, and that's something that will prevent plenty of distress when it stops you against heading down the incorrect course.

But the truth is, after you have recently been used up several times you begin in order to awaken. If you really give what you buy a photo, then unless you carry out strong scientific studies are when you are pushing your own luck. Newcomers and those who have a hard time gaining knowledge through experience with being scammed will have this challenge. It can be irritating for everyone, but also for different causes, since there are different situations and individuals can easily grumble about a technique that is really good. There are certain actions and attributes you need to obtain, and this is definitely one of these. One of the first things you should do ahead of an interview will be discovered the company you will possibly work with. The net offers you the data you need to know. Most if not completely organizations you job interview together with may have a website. Each company that you job interview together with asks you for those who have questions about the subject. Once you respond, it is possible to reveal that you know a little bit regarding their company all things considered. You could condition a few things you understand about the company, then request a matter or even 2. It will seem extremely good when it looks like you understand about their particular company, and you did the proper research.

Make sure you abandon the required time to get to your job interview, to overdue is one method to make a negative impression. You should make sure you are able to call them along the way when you have to -so have your cell phone and also the phone number together with you. You cannot usually manage circumstances, and quite often you happen to be overdue regardless of the better of objectives. Calling will help save the problem coming from learning to be a disaster in case you are actually overdue. In some cases, getting overdue without any reason could be result in enough to be disqualified. We can not usually manage everything that occurs, thus just do all you may to be punctually.

Louie, Season 3

Perhaps this was simply an arbitrary choice on C.K.?s part, but I found it fitting that the name Parker Posey?s character gives Louie, at first, is ?Tape Recorder.? When he first falls for her at the bookstore, he regards her, to a significant degree, as a device, as a vessel?one to be filled with his sexual and maternal fantasies, as in the black-and-white cutaways, and one to be filled with his own self-doubts and anxieties, as when he asks her out and does the talking for her: imagining, voicing, and countering her reasoned rejection without once letting her speak. In last night?s episode, which I agree was astonishing, the tape recorder comes to messy, unpredictable life (the way real people, and not devices, are wont to do) and morphs, over the course of 20-odd minutes, into Liz.

IPO Watch: Is Manchester United a Good Investment? | Stocks on ...

Every fan dreams of owning a piece of there favorite professional sports team? Would you overpay for the privilege to say you own a piece of the New York Yankees? Dallas Cowboys? L.A. Lakers? Most fans would hop on that opportunity right away. Well for the rest of the world, soccer team Manchester United is their New York Yankees. Winner of 19 English Premier League Titles, Manchester United is the most glorified sports franchise of all-time, boasting well over 600 million supporters worldwide. And in less than a month, just about any of those 600 million supporters will be able to make one call or a simple click of the mouse and own shares of the iconic franchise. Buying shares of Man United will be a great idea to many for the obvious personal reasons but the real question is whether or not buying shares of Manchester United is a good investment at all?

Why is Manchester United Going to Be Listed on the New York Stock Exchange?

So let?s analyze why a famous British Soccer team is going to list and trade at the New York Stock Exchange. It starts with a rich owner, Malcolm Glazer, who has huge ambitions and aspirations for the club. Malcolm Glazer bought the team in 2005 for $1.2 billion and wants to go public, raise funds, and mitigate risks while still retaining control of the team. Something every investor would love to have the opportunity to do. Listing on the NYSE will give the Glazer family a dual-class share structure; allowing them to keep voting rights.? This model is very much similar to the structure the Murdoch family setup to keep control of News Corp (NASDAQ: NWSA). Listing on the London Stock Exchange would not allow this kind of setup which is why they have chosen to bring the British Soccer across the pond.

What Can We Expect as an Investment?

What?s not to like, Manchester United is a franchise that turns a profit every year and has a track record of being a solid equity investment. Man United has appreciated more than ?20%?annually for the 14 years it was traded prior to the Glazer family taking control and taking it private seven years ago.

Cash is king & Manchester United has serious debt woes. The lopsided stock-ownership structure is nothing to be worried of when you compare it to the franchise?s debt woes. Yes that?s right, Man United currently has $650 million in debt, a staggering number when you factor in that the club carried no debt every year before 2005 when the Glazer family gained ownership. Since then, the Glazer has leveraged the club quite a bit using these tactics to get the team, and since the acquisition have used it as a piggy bank of sorts.?

If the IPO is successful and raises the expected $300 million or more where will that money go? Being valued at $3 billion, the assumption is that most of that money will pay down the debt but some fans or future shareholders might have other plans. Fans hope the money raised goes towards some more exciting business moves such as acquiring top notch players to keep up with the rest of the league, lowering ticket prices, or improving the stadium grounds. Acquiring top talent is even more intense now after they lost to cross-town rival Manchester City, a team that was long one of the worst in the league until it was purchased by a group from Abu Dhabi who invested billions in acquiring the top players across the world and successfully turned the team into an instant winner.

Manchester United fans have been pressuring the club more and more to acquire top players but the club?s debt worries have sucked out hundreds of millions that the team use to use to improve the talent on the pitch. A main reason Manchester United isn?t the football powerhouse that use to dominate the league year in year out.

For sale: world-famous company that?s highly leveraged with anti-takeover provisions and no dividend or stock buyback plans in sight.

A large issue surrounding the IPO is future accountability. As result of the Jobs Act, foreigncompanies can take advantage of many loopholes. For example, Manchester United will not have to report results every quarter or give forward-looking guidance. Pretty sweet deal for ownership, but a serious issue for most investors.

Who wants to own shares of a company saddled with debt where even the largest shareholders hold no control. Many will still buy for the same reason people bought shares in the Green Bay Packers, a stock that is such a novelty that shares have no dividend and cannot be sold for a profit. There will be a large group of wealthy fans who love the team and want the power to say they own part of Man United. But that doesn?t mean they?ll make any money off it. So to investors, especially institutional ones it could be a tough sell. One thing Man United does have going for them is the fact that they?re an exclusive rarity that compares to nothing. Just think you could own a piece of Manchester United, the most glorified football team. For most diehard fans that?ll be an easy sell.

What other Sports Teams are Publicly Traded? While there are technically no other professional sports teams publicly traded in the U.S., investors can buy shares of Madison Square Garden (NASDAQ: MSG), which gives you ownership of the NBA?s New York Knicks, the NHL Rangers, a WNBA team, an arena and a TV network. Sorry, no Jeremy Lin though. Another similar company is Liberty Media (NASDAQ: LMCA) owns the Atlanta Braces baseball team, which is only one component of their huge portfolio of companies. Nintendo (NTDOY) owns most of the Seattle Mariners, Rogers Communications (RCI) a small piece of the Toronto Blue Jays. So technically all of these are indirect ways to owning a sports team. Outside the U.S., there are a handful of soccer teams that actively trade on other foreign global markets. For example, AJAX trades in the Netherlands; Juventus in Italy; Benfica in Portugal, and Fenerbache a lesser-known name listed in Turkey, but has an annualized return of almost 14 percent. Meanwhile the other mentioned teams all had negative annualized returns and have all been losing investments. The big question looming is where Manchester United will stand.

When will it be on the market? The worldwide roadshow is just beginning and Manchester United has elaborate plans to host a worldwide road show that will start in Europe and end in the U.S.? Pricing and trading is expected to begin at some point in August but due to recent reports of the IPO being a tough sale Manchester United has put the IPO on hold. While it?s technically on hold, things could change very soon as analysts expect the roadshow will start next week, speeding up the process in hopes to feed off of the U.S. markets big recent rally. That?s right around the time that Manchester United kicks off its regular season. Only time will tell on which will be the bigger winner, the team on the field or the team on the stock exchange.?

(AP) ? Andrew Curtin said it happened at least twice at his Boston-area high school in the last year. Angry about a breakup, a boy ended up at the school nurse's office with a broken hand after punching a locker or a wall.

"You don't think about when you see two people walking down the hall, 'Are they in a bad relationship or is it good?'" the 17-year-old Waltham High School senior said Thursday.

But he was among about 250 teenagers doing a lot of thinking about healthy relationships at a seminar at Simmons College on Thursday. And the dating advice was coming from an unlikely source: city government officials.

Boston's Public Health Commission partnered with local social service agencies to put on its third annual "Break-Up Summit" for teens as part of a $1 million, four-year grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Nationwide, the $18 million program known as Start Strong is aimed at teaching teens in 11 cities to prevent dating violence. Counselors in Boston on Thursday focused on teaching teens to end relationships in ways that don't spark negative behavior like cheating, public humiliation, or worse.

Nicole Daley, who heads Boston's Start Strong program, said a bad teenage relationship can lead to problems like depression, low self-esteem, falling academic grades, and even unwanted pregnancies in cases where one partner tries to manipulate the other. There's also the risk of a physically dangerous confrontation.

"In popular media, cheating is seen as an excuse for violence," Daley said.

Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed about 10 percent of students nationwide reported a boyfriend or girlfriend had physically hurt them in the last year. CDC statistics also showed that among adults who were victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner, 15 percent of men and 22 percent of women first experienced some kind of partner violence when they were between 11 and 17 years old.

Teens who were part of Thursday's seminar described a dating scene where social media can make ending relationships even more emotionally fraught. Many said that changing one's Facebook status back to "single" was the worst way to break up with a significant other.

"The world knows before you do," said Cassie Desrochers, 17, another Waltham High senior.

"A relationship is personal. The whole world shouldn't know about it."

President Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, the nonprofit that helped design the Start Strong program, said that social media also complicates teen relationships because a bad rumor can travel far in seconds.

"When I was growing up ... we had a telephone and we didn't have voicemail and it took a lot of work to spread it," she said.

Soler also said breakups always used to be in person. But that's not the case anymore.

On Thursday, teens talked about breaking up by sending a text message, or being on the receiving end of one. They also spoke about fights they'd seen in their schools between students who were in competition for another student's affections, or felt jilted after a relationship ended badly.

Counselors at the forum urged teens to communicate with partners about relationship boundaries, together defining whether they were "just texting," casually "hooking up," ''friends with benefits," or in a monogamous relationship.

They also encouraged students to end relationships with face-to-face contact, and to look for warning signs that ongoing relationships could turn abusive.

"Now I've got all the information," said West Roxbury High School sophomore Tyler Jones, who's training as a Start Strong peer leader. "I realize you've got to give your partner space. You don't need to be hugging up on them all day."

Common Sense: EBay's Turnaround Defies Convention for Internet ...

Remember Myspace, Friendster, eToys, Webvan, Urban Fetch, Pets.com? Like meteors, they burned with dazzling brilliance before turning shareholder dollars to ash. EBay, Yahoo and AOL, the dominant Internet triumvirate circa 2004, seemed destined for a similar fate. The conventional wisdom has been that once decline sets in at an Internet company, it?s irreversible.

But that was before eBay?s latest earnings surprise, which sent its stock soaring and had analysts scrambling to raise their projections. ?Can Internet companies ever turn around? The answer has been no,? Ken Sena, Internet analyst at Evercore, told me this week. ?But now, there?s eBay. The answer may turn out to be yes.?

If so, eBay?s success has big implications for struggling companies like Yahoo and AOL, not to mention more recent sensations that have already lost some luster, like Zynga, Groupon and even Facebook, whose shares tumbled this week after its first earnings report as a public company disappointed investors. ?EBay has demonstrated that it?s possible to turn the corner even against long odds,? said David Spitz, president and chief operating officer of ChannelAdvisor, an e-commerce consulting company.

EBay shares hit a peak of over $58 in 2004 and made its chief executive, Meg Whitman, a Silicon Valley celebrity. But by November 2007, when she stepped down to enter politics, the telltale signs of decline had set in. Its stock was slumping. Its dominant online auction business had matured, and growth had slowed. Sellers complained about higher fees and poor support. That year, eBay wrote off $1.4 billion on its poorly conceived $2.5 billion acquisition of the calling service Skype, recording its first loss as a public company. Analysts worried that eBay had lost its quirky soul, and was abandoning the flea market auction model that had made it distinctive and dominant in online auctions. By early 2009, its stock was barely over $10, down over 80 percent from its peak.

Ms. Whitman was succeeded by a former Bain & Company managing director, John Donahoe. ?One of the unique things about the Internet is a company can be a white-hot success and become a global brand and reach global scale in just a few years ? that?s the good news,? he told me this week. ?But then somebody can turn around and do it to you. There?s constant disruption. One of the first things I had to do here was face reality. EBay was getting disrupted.?

Little more than four years after taking charge, a buoyant Mr. Donahoe sounded like the chief executive of a surging start-up when he announced eBay?s latest results on July 18. So thoroughly has eBay been transformed that he didn?t even mention its traditional auction business. ?Our multiyear effort is paying off,? he said. Profit more than doubled and revenue jumped 23 percent. ?EBay is revitalized. We believe the best is yet to come.? In a stock market struggling with recession fears and the European debt crisis, eBay stock this week hit a six-year high.

How has eBay done it when so many others have failed?

Excitement about eBay?s prospects has little to do with its traditional auction business, or even its core e-commerce operations, although its marketplace division posted solid results and had its best quarter since 2006, the company said. Most of its growth came from mobile retailing and its PayPal online payments division, a business it acquired in 2002 for what now looks like a bargain $1.5 billion.

As consumers embrace shopping on their smartphones, ?mobile continues to be a game-changer,? Mr. Donahoe said. He noted that 90 million users had downloaded eBay?s mobile app and that 600,000 customers made their first mobile purchase during the most recent quarter. ?A woman?s handbag is purchased on eBay mobile every 30 seconds,? he said. ?Mobile is revolutionizing how people shop and pay.?

?It?s hard to think of many companies that benefit from mobile,? Mr. Sena said. ?Usually it means more competition. But clearly, eBay is one of them. EBay is offering a one-click payment solution. You don?t have to type in a credit card number or PIN. It?s just one click on your mobile phone.?

Mr. Spitz said he was recently stopped at a traffic light and the sun was bothering his eyes. By the time the light turned green, he had used his phone to order and pay for sunglasses. ?This is what commerce anytime, anywhere means,? he said. ?It?s here.?

home improvement | window placement planning

Whether building a new home or doing major renovations on an older home, there are some important points to consider when planning the placement of your new windows.

? Spend your money where it counts! Place the largest windows to take advantage of the best views that will help connect the inside of your house with the outdoors. In most cases, that means nice big windows overlooking your garden, yard or adjoining green space.

? On the inside of the house, consider your furniture placement. Try not to block any windows with your sofa or other large items. Adding a window bench in front of a picture window is a great way to make the most of your natural light while still providing plenty of seating.

? When deciding on the height of the bottom of a window for bedrooms or living rooms, the window should be low enough that you can see the view when lying in bed or sitting in your favorite chair.

? Aesthetically, your house will look more cohesive if the tops of all of the windows are at the same height on each story of the house.

? Be sure to have windows on the side of the house that receives prevailing winds to allow for more airflow into the house.

? Place windows throughout the house so that they can catch cross-breezes. The easiest way to think of this placement is that when standing at one window, you should be able to see the other window that it will be cross-ventilating with. For example, from the living room picture window you can look down the hallway, through the open bedroom door and see the bedroom window.

? Ensure that your replacement windows, particularly those in the basement, meet egress requirements as per your local building code before you have them installed.

? Green Tip: To make the most of passive solar heat gains, consider the solar orientation of your home. If you live in a cool climate, you will want to increase the amount of the sun?s heat that penetrates into your house. That means ensuring that you have plenty of windows on the West and South facing sides of the house. If you live in a hot climate, the reverse is true. You will want fewer windows on the West side of the house, or ensure that there are trees or roof overhangs providing some shade.

Windows provide a first impression of your house from the outside and help connect the interior of your home with the outside world. They also provide protection from the elements, allow natural sunlight into the home and offer air circulation. They can even make a difference on the energy you use heating and cooling your home. Talk to your architect, contractor or local window expert for more information on planning your window placement to make the most of your new windows.

EYES ON LONDON: A scrambled jet and careless tweet

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

FIGHTER JET SCRAMBLED

False alarm. But alarming nonetheless.

Britain's Ministry of Defense says it scrambled a Typhoon fighter jet after an airplane entered airspace that came too close to the Olympic area. London is already clenching up with increased security two days ahead of the opening ceremony.

Typhoons are part of the Ministry of Defense's security plan for the upcoming games, which will also rely on thousands of troops, warships, surveillance aircraft and sniper-toting helicopters.

The Ministry of Defense said a Typhoon was launched shortly before noon on Wednesday in response to a commercial aircraft that was not in contact with air traffic control. Communications were quickly restored and no further action was required, the ministry said.

ADLYMPICS

Lots of people want to advertise during the Olympics. Among them: the president of the United States.

NBC says it has topped the $1 billion mark in advertising sales for the Olympic Games beginning this week in London. The network says President Barack Obama has spent $6.5 million to buy national ads during the Olympics. It says Mitt Romney hasn't bought any yet.

The network said Wednesday it is the biggest advertising haul ever for an Olympics and topped the $850 million in ad sales for Beijing in 2008. There's a lot more room for advertising, since NBC Universal is showing more than 5,000 hours of competition on NBC, its cable affiliates and online.

AUSTERITY GAMES

The tracksuits and bags of Egypt's Olympic team are emblazoned with the familiar Nike and Adidas logos. But look closer ? they're fakes.

"We signed with a Chinese distributor in light of Egypt's economic situation," the country's committee chairman Gen. Mahmoud Ahmed Ali told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Ali said the real thing was just too expensive, and the state of Egypt's battered finances led him to opt for the counterfeit gear, which he said was "sufficient."

And what if the sports brands don't like it?

If Nike has a problem with it, then it should deal directly with the Chinese distributor who sold it, Ali said in separate remarks to the state-run Ahram Online.

So far, the ones complaining are Egypt's athletes.

Synchronized swimmer Yomna Khallaf wrote on Twitter that she spent more than $300 out of pocket to buy better training gear.

TESTING THE TRANSPORT

From AP reporter Sylvia Hui's story Wednesday about London logistics:

"London 2012: Traffic jams on the roads, train problems underground, and a fancy cable car frozen in the air. Wednesday saw an uncertain test of the British capital's Olympic transport plan, as lanes reserved for Olympic VIPs came into force two days before the start of the games and the city's creaky subway system struggled with glitches."

FINISHING TOUCHES

The "Beatbox" is one of the most eye-catching buildings in the Olympic Park, a silver structure covered with 8-foot long red and white panels that look as if they've been sprinkled haphazardly on the building.

Asif Khan and Pernilla Ohrstedt designed the building after winning a contest from Coca-Cola. The building will light up and also play music by Mark Ronson that responds to movements of visitors by remixing the arrangement.

Two days before the opening ceremonies, Khan was standing outside the project that has consumed him for the last 14 months. "It's been non-stop," Khan said.

He can't let himself relax just yet. Khan was sweating over every little detail, even suggesting that a seven-foot sign that stands outside the building be "packed a little" under one corner to make it level.

"This is my baby," Khan said. "There have been a lot of sweat and tears on this project. It's my hometown and it's got to be perfect."

THE PIN ECONOMY

If an Olympics is approaching, the pin trade can't be far behind.

Outside Westfield Mall, at the edge of the Olympic Park security zone, a dozen people set up shop Wednesday with pins from the 2012 games and Olympics past, trading and selling. Some erected small displays covered in velvet to showcase their wares.

At past games, the trading reaches a frenzy in the trading of crafted metal pins issued for the Olympics by corporations, countries and media organizations.

Michael Phelps is a singular sensation in the pool. Outside of it, he takes bad pictures just like the rest of us.

Phelps' photo on his Olympic credential shows an unsmiling, wild-haired man with a scraggly beard. It was taken earlier this summer during high-altitude training in Colorado.

"We're not allowed to show teeth. That was the rule," he said. "I think I actually did just wake up from a nap. That's why the hair is all over the place and I look a little out of it."

A FEMALE FIRST

The Muslim female athletes are creating a lot of buzz in London, especially women from three Islamic countries that have never sent women to the Olympics before ? Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar.

The al-Sharshani atheletes from Qatar are not competing at the London Games along with the four Qatari female athletes who will break new ground by taking part in swimming, shooting and track. But Reema and Yasmian al-Sharshani are already thinking about making history at the Rio Games.

Reema, a shooter, wants to become the first Qatari woman to both become a doctor and win an Olympic medal.

"They used to think in our country that women should stay at home. Sports was not for us, only for men," Reema said at an exhibition of photographs profiling Arab women in sports. "We are good in anything, including sports."

Reema is already training for the Rio Games in 2016; her sister, the first female golfer in Qatar, hopes to debut there along with golf itself after the sport returns to the Olympics for the first time in more than a century.

"I saw women play golf in Egypt four years ago, and I said, 'Why not have it in Qatar, and I play and become so good I will go to the Olympics?'" Yasmian said. "After four years, I hope it will not be only me going to compete in golf, but a whole team of women golfers."

THE FLYING SQUIRREL

U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler Ellis Coleman has become known as the "Flying Squirrel" for his unusual signature move of the same name. The move has earned Coleman plenty of fame through YouTube clips of him using it at the 2011 Junior World Championships.

Instead of trying to move past the notoriety garnered for a trick move, Coleman has embracing the "Flying Squirrel" moniker so much that he even went out and bought a real flying squirrel to keep as a pet.

Coleman found the squirrel, which he named "Rocky," at a mall near the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. All told, Coleman figures Rocky has cost him about $500.

OLYMPIC DIPLOMACY

Nobody's talking about a thaw in relations between Iran and Israel, but it was interesting to see what the head of the Iranian Olympic Committee had to say when asked how his country's athletes would respond if the IOC calls a minute's silence in memory of the eleven Israelis killed at the Munich Games in 1972.

Bahram Afsharzadeh says his delegation would "respect" such a call

He also made clear there would be no question of Iranian teams boycotting events against Israelis, as has happened in the past.

Afsharzadeh's pledge regarding the memorial is unlikely to be put to the test as IOC chief Jacques Rogge has ruled out a commemoration at the opening ceremony. But the very fact that he spoke in such terms will not have gone unnoticed by Israeli officials.

Mood music matters, as diplomats like to say.

MAKING THEMSELVES AT HOME

Today is podium training for the men. Training on the competition floor might not sound like a big deal, considering gymnasts have the exact same equipment in the training gym. But the competition floor is on a raised podium ? about 4 feet off the ground ? and that changes the feel and response of the equipment.

The equipment is bouncier, for one thing. And just as there are different makes of shoes or swimsuits, there are different brands of gymnastics equipment and each brand has its own peculiarities.

Podium training gives gymnasts a chance to get used to all of that before the scoring starts for real.

STADIUM STYLE

Will Olympic stadiums forever be in the shadow of Beijing's Bird's Nest?

In the wake of that architectural marvel, some have called London's Olympic Stadium plain and uninspiring.

Not Louisa Gummer, though. The volunteer was gushing to a friend on the phone about how wonderful it looks.

"It never was going to be the Bird's Nest and that's what makes it so brilliant," Gummer said. "It's a legacy project that will be useful long after the Games are over."

Gummer has been inside, and she said she likes the more intimate feel.

"You can sit on one side and look across the way and see the faces of those on the other side," she said. "It's so intimate and it doesn't feel big until you're standing right in the middle of it."

HEY ... JUDE?

AP's Jon Krawczynski reports from Olympic Park:

I'm sitting on a bench outside Olympic Stadium, and I'm not going anywhere. Macca is holding court.

I can't see Paul McCartney. I can only hear him. And that's the most important thing anyway, right?

As I wandered around the park to get the lay of the land, I heard some music coming from the stadium. It was "Hey, Jude," stopping and starting several times.

A sound check? Sure sounded like it. Could I get in? Security was having none of that.

A dress rehearsal for the opening ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday night, so the chances of McCartney holding a sound check were real.

Alas, this isn't that.

A quick swap of emails with McCartney's agent, Stuart Bell, reveals that Sir Paul had been here on Tuesday but is in Liverpool on Wednesday attending a graduation ceremony.

The Beatles were long broken up by the time I came around in 1979, but instead of being raised on kids music, I got the Fab Four. My parents are the biggest Beatles fans I know, my father in particular. The chance to see McCartney put on a show here in London was something we talked about often leading up to this trip.

This was a close call. I can't imagine what it will be like when he hits the stage for real.

GOING COUNTRY

The five members of the U.S. men's road race team are staying this week near Box Hill, well away from the hustle and bustle of London, at a quaint hotel where they can step out the front door, hop on their bikes and train on the circuit that could well decide Saturday's race.

The loop for the road race goes past some of the iconic sights of London, such as Buckingham Palace, and will finish on the Mall ? a dream come true for television cameras and local visitor bureaus. But Box Hill, in the countryside south of the city, is where fans will have the best view of the race, and where the first gold medal could be won or lost.

That's because riders will traverse the hill multiple times ? nine for the men, three for the women ? and that could ultimately shatter the main field and prevent the widely expected sprint finish.

There are a half dozen team buses parked outside the hotel, with all manner of equipment at the ready. The roads around Box Hill are popular with local cyclists, too, so for every toned Olympian with virtually no body fat, there's at least five more folks who have managed to squeeze their girth into spandex so they can take on the same course.

Britain's Kerri-Anne Payne was the first athlete to try out the Serpentine course Wednesday, and was full of enthusiasm. "It was really nice to get in there," she said of her morning swim. "I had to fight with a couple of ducks though to get round the buoys."

And the reeds?

He did it at the Aquatics Center, where AP will be producing imagery shot with such cameras throughout the Olympic games ? both underwater and above. See the photo here: http://apne.ws/Q2M8gC

SKY CORRIDOR

In the Netherlands, parts of the sky are being cordoned off for the Olympics.

Airspace above North Brabant province usually is used by Dutch F16 pilots as a training area, but authorities say the Top Guns are going to spread their wings elsewhere over the country and the North Sea to make way for London-bound Olympic flights carrying athletes or spectators.

A TECH HEADACHE

Just over 48 hours to go, and there's a scramble to finish work at many of London's venues.

Miles of cables have been installed by news organizations and some have been inadvertently damaged in the rush by builders to get everything ready. At the hockey venue inside the Olympic Park, new fences were fitted for safety reasons ? and they've damaged crucial wiring.

Worst-case scenario: Major cabling damage could theoretically close off an entire venue in terms of data transmission ? whether text, photos or TV images.

Technicians are being sent back repeatedly to check that everything's OK ? and they're worried. Wednesday is the last day anyone's officially allowed to wire things up and yet there's potential for damage for several more days.

GOODWILL GAMES?

A strike by airport immigration workers has been called off. Now, taxi drivers are postponing a protest.

The reason: "To avoid further inconvenience to Londoners; we don't want to make a bad situation worse," according to a statement by "Cabbies Against Boris" (a reference to London Mayor Boris Johnson.)

The drivers are angry at the Olympic Lanes which they say will cause chaos in an always-busy city. The lanes are there solely to allow "an elite few which seems to be mainly comprised of Corporate Sponsors to travel quickly at the expense of the majority of hardworking Londoners," the cabbies say.

RACING THE CLOCK

The games begin in 48 hours, and London is still putting on the finishing touches.

Chainsaws were blaring at the equestrian venue in North Greenwich and an industrious Games staff member spent the morning walking around The O2 Arena (home of the gymnastics) with a roller dripping with purple paint, dabbing a little here, a little there.

No "Do Not Touch" signs, though.

CRUMBLING CHINA?

Four years ago, the Chinese men's gymnastics team soared to seven gold medals in front of the home crowd in Beijing. It could be a much different result in London.

The team looked sloppy during podium training on Wednesday and lacked their usual swagger.

And they were forced to replace 2004 pommel horse gold medalist Teng Haibin who has injured his left arm. Guo Weiyang will reportedly take his place.

CHANGE OF PACE

For three Summer Olympics, Adrian Croitoru competed as a middleweight in judo for Romania ? placing as high as fifth in both the 1992 Barcelona Games and again in Atlanta in '96. That's why his new gig as coach of the Armenians is quite a change of pace ? and still a little bit strange, too.

"Now, it's more difficult for me as a coach," Croitoru reflected as he arrived at Heathrow Airport early Wednesday with several athletes.

"I'm Romanian. I coach the Armenians," the 41-year-old said with a smile as everybody's bags were piled on one sled-like cart before they made their way off.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The London Olympics has been dubbed the social media games, and it's already living up to the moniker.

A spokeswoman for Twitter says there were more tweets about the Olympics on a single day last week than there were during the entire Beijing Games. The number of daily tweets about the London Games has been on par with the numbers during the Vancouver Winter Olympics, and the opening ceremony is coming up on Friday night.

LESS FLESH

The women's beach volleyball uniforms have gone politically correct this year, with shorts and sleeved tops replacing the bikinis.

The move was made to respect the cultural beliefs of players from different countries and updates the dress code that has been in effect since the sport became a medal event in 1996.

The American women said they'll wear more clothing in London if it's cold during their night matches, but bikinis would've been their first choice because that's what they're used to wearing. Still, they unanimously applauded the relaxed dress code.

"We want women of all different religions to be able to play our sport," said Jennifer Kessy, "and to not be able to play because of the gear is not OK."

LESS ATTENTION, BUT IT'S OK

The American beach volleyball players walked into their news conference Wednesday lean, fit and the center of attention. But when the bulk of the questions were lobbed at the women players, a reporter gamely asked the men if they felt overlooked.

"I'm perfectly OK with it. They are way prettier," said reigning gold medalist Phil Dalhausser, recognized most for his 6-foot-9 frame and bald head.

Then the Americans put a 100-78 thumping on the Spaniards and Love tweeted him a simple and stinging retort. "How'd that work out for you, buddy?"

A PRINCE AMONG VOLLEYBALLERS

Beach volleyball appears to be the trendy sport right now, with London abuzz that Prince Harry apparently has tickets to some matches.

Count the young American duo of Jennifer Kessy and April Ross among those stoked about his possible presence. Kessy pumped her fist in excitement when told Harry is rumored to be going to the venue.

"We've been tweeting," Ross said, laughing.

"We've been putting his name out there for some time, but no contact yet," Kessy chimed in.

Both women said they'd be in favor of any members of the royal family attending, and they'd welcome a photo opportunity.

Added Ross: "Harry or Kate, especially."

HELLO FROM BARCELONA

AP's Eddie Pells checks in from a former Olympic city:

Hello from the Olympic City. Wait, did I get on the wrong flight? I'm in Barcelona.

OK, it's a small vacation before heading to London for the real action, but it's hard not to think "Olympics" here in what has arguably become Spain's hottest tourist spot over the past 20 years, since the Olympics changed the way that both the world views Barcelona and Barcelona views the world.

As one tour guide put it to me: Before the Olympics, Barcelona used to live with its back to the water; after the Olympics, it faces the water. Likewise, before the Olympics, Barcelona lived with its back to the world, and since the 1992 Games, the city welcomes the world.

All this becomes clear while touring the famous Sagrada Familia ? the still-unfinished church designed by the iconic architect, Antonio Gaudi ? or by taking a stroll along the Plajita de la Barceloneta, which, pre-1992, was underused waterfront that was redesigned and turned into a beach in anticipation of the Olympics.

Spain, as we all know, is suffering these days. A look at the latest headlines tells us about an unemployment rate nearing 25 percent and a growing number of state-like regions, including Catalonia, where Barcelona is the capital, that can't afford to maintain all the infrastructure that has sprung up over the last two decades or so.

Sad news. And these days, there are big questions as to whether Barcelona can afford to keep its arms open to the world and remain the city it grew into when the Olympics came to town.

THE QUEEN WILL BE GETTING HIGH

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is about to scale new heights.

Royal officials say the queen will whiz to the top of London's Orbit tower during a visit to the Olympic Park on Saturday.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, will take in the panoramic views from atop the 115-meter (380-foot) landmark. The tower ? a ruby red mass of twisting steel that some have likened to a crushed rollercoaster ? has divided opinion: some say bold, others eyesore. The queen will be accompanied by her daughter Princess Anne ? but not by her oldest son Prince Charles, a vocal opponent of edgy modern architecture.

The royals also are due to meet competitors and catering staff at the athletes' village.

Smith said Monday night that he's keeping away from Twitter for the rest of the games.

REMEMBERING MUNICH

Widows of two Israeli Olympians killed by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics hope silence will speak volumes at Friday's opening ceremony.

Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano are asking spectators to stand and hold a minute of silence when International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge rises to speak at Friday's ceremony. They say they want to show the IOC it was wrong to deny the athletes a spot on the program.

"They were killed at an Olympic venue. They should be honored there," said Spitzer, widow of fencing coach Andrei Spitzer, who died in the Munich attack.

They have gathered more than 100,000 signatures for the moment of silence and count President Barack Obama among their supporters.

The IOC has decided against holding a moment of silence during London's opening ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of the attack by Palestinian gunmen that killed 11 Israeli team members. Israeli and German government officials and the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee have urged the IOC to hold such an observance.

NO STRIKE

Lots of people are coming to London from overseas, and it now looks like they're going to have fewer problems getting in.

A British union has just called off a strike planned for Thursday by immigration staff at London's Heathrow Airport. Authorities had feared a walkout over pay and job losses would throw the Olympics into turmoil. Authorities this week urged the workers to consider the damage such action would inflict on Britain's image with the world watching.

CARTOGRAPHIC CONUNDRUM

When it comes to the Olympics, geography can be politics.

Georgia's National Olympic Committee is fuming over two Russian athletes, born in what was then the Soviet Union's republic of Georgia, describing their place of birth as breakaway republics that Georgia and the international community do not recognize.

"Politics should not meddle in sports," says Georgiy Asanidze, a member of Georgia's Olympic Committee.

The games' official website lists Russian wrestler Besik Kudukhov's place of birth as "South Ossetia, Russia." The place of birth of another wrestler Denis Tsargush, born in the town of Gudauta, is also listed as Russia. Abkhazia and South Ossetia threw off most Georgian control in separatist wars in the 1990s, but Georgian authorities retained control of swaths of South Ossetia and a small piece of Abkhazia until the 2008 war with Russia. Afterward, Russia recognized their independence, as did Nicaragua, Venezuela and a handful of tiny Pacific nations.

THE GREATEST

Will he? Won't he? British newspapers have buzzed with speculation that Muhammad Ali may have a role in London's Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday.

The 1960 heavyweight boxing gold medalist and former world champion is in town this week, but looks far too frail to play a significant part in director Danny Boyle's spectacular on Friday night.

At an award ceremony on Tuesday, Ali was helped onto stage and sat largely motionless. Parkinson's disease has stolen the 70-year-old's once-world-beating strength and quick reflexes and frozen his beautiful face into a mask. Ali did not speak at the ceremony.

Among those who hope Ali will make an appearance, however brief, at the Opening Ceremony is Tyrone Monaghan. His father, Paddy, a bare-knuckle boxer, struck up a long friendship with Ali when both were younger. On visits to Britain, Ali regularly would drop by the Monaghans' house ? to drink tea, chat and even spar with Tyrone.

"There are so many great things about him," Tyrone says of Ali. "You can't sum it up in one sentence."

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Wednesday marks the first day that London's usually aggressive drivers have to respect the unpopular "Games Lanes" ? known informally as Zil lanes, after the Russian limos ? or face a stiff fine.

There were fears of massive tie-ups as two-lane motorways were effectively cut in half to make way for the "Olympic family" vehicles allowed to use the special lanes, so many commuters seem to have switched to public transport to avoid the hassle.

On the A40 highway into central London, rush hour traffic was lighter than usual, and the Zil lane was completely empty save for a few black BMWs and a couple of truck drivers who didn't seem to have got the message.

As the road spilled onto Marylebone Road near Madame Tussauds wax museum, a large electronic sign told motorists they were free to use the Games Lanes at that point, but few ventured over the imposing double-width, solid line painted on the roadway for the Olympics period ? despite the reassurances, they were apparently afraid that London's ubiquitous traffic cameras would cause them to be fined.

Eventually, as traffic slowed and a second sign said all lanes were open, drivers crossed the line and normal traffic patterns resumed.
