Eagles rebound from poor effort, beat Browns

PHILADELPHIA - Michael Vick is saving those deep throws for the games that count.
Vick led three scoring drives, the first-team defense pitched a shutout and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Cleveland Browns 24-14 on a rain-soaked Thursday night.
Vick wasn't particularly sharp. He took a lot of hits and had to escape trouble quite a bit. Still, he managed to complete 10 of 18 passes for 98 yards. He ran for 24 yards and a touchdown.
"We're trying to do a lot of different things," Vick said. "This is the time to do it. We're working on things and everything will come together in Week 1."
Most of Vick's completions were underneath passes, and DeSean Jackson didn't have any receptions. Don't expect that in the regular season. Jackson is one of the top big-play receivers in the league.
"You have to take what the defense gives you," Vick said. "If they play 30 yards off, you throw underneath. We're not trying to go deep."
Eagles coach Andy Reid joked that deep passes may not be part of the offense.
"We might not do that this year very much," he said with a straight face.
Against defending AFC champion Pittsburgh last week, Vick threw three interceptions in the first half and the starting defense allowed touchdowns on the first two drives. That was hardly an effort worthy of a team that has Super Bowl aspirations.
"After last week, I still felt confidence in myself and my teammates and our ability to succeed," Vick said. "I know what I did, trying to force things. It's about moving forward, and getting better each week."
The Browns helped the Eagles get back on track.
Colt McCoy and the rest of Cleveland's starting offense hardly looked like the crew that scored five TDs on nine possessions in the first two preseason games. The Browns punted four times, missed a field goal and McCoy threw an interception on six first-half drives.
"I didn't play particularly well," McCoy said. "Unfortunate things happened and when you play from behind, you force so much."
Both coaches had planned to play their starters into the third quarter, but the backups came in after a heavy downpour during halftime. By that time, Lincoln Financial Field was more than half empty.
Vince Young, one of Philadelphia's numerous high-profile free-agent signings, took over for Vick and guided the Eagles to a touchdown. He was 9 of 12 for 58 yards.
Young's 10-yard TD run put the Eagles up 24-0 in the third quarter.
Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson played his first game since suffering a seizure in practice earlier this month and later being diagnosed with a brain condition. He sacked McCoy for a 10-yard loss in the first quarter.
"I was a little bit nervous at first," Patterson said. "I had to get that feeling back. But, it felt pretty good and I felt pretty happy to get a hit on him."
The Browns have several notable ties to Philadelphia. General manager Tom Heckert held that same position for the Eagles from 2006-09. Head coach Pat Shurmur was an assistant in Philadelphia for 10 seasons. Senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes was the Eagles head coach from 1995-98.
The similarities end there.
The Eagles have won six division titles and made nine playoff appearances in the past 12 years. The Browns have had just two winning seasons in that span and are 14-34 over the past three seasons.
A special teams blunder led to Philadelphia's first score. Punt returner Jordan Norwood was run into by teammate Sheldon Brown, a longtime starting cornerback for the Eagles, while calling a fair catch and was hit by the ball. Snapper Jon Dorenbos recovered it at the Browns 13. On second down, Ronnie Brown ran in from the 13 behind a strong block by center Jason Kelce to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
"The freak play on the punt, that happens very infrequently and that's unfortunate," Shurmur said.
Vick's 8-yard TD run put Philadelphia ahead 17-0 in the second quarter. A 14-yard pass to Jason Avant ? the first completion to a wide receiver ? on third-and-4 set up the score. Earlier in that drive, Vick got crushed by D'Qwell Jackson and threw an interception. But the play was nullified because Jackson was called for roughing the passer.
An interception by Asante Samuel led to Alex Henery's 37-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Seneca Wallace tossed an 18-yard TD pass to Alex Smith early in the fourth quarter for Cleveland. Wallace finished 3 of 6 for 53 yards and one TD. McCoy was 9 of 18 for 89 yards and one pick.
Jarrett Brown threw a 4-yard TD pass to Chris Matthews with 1:57 left to get the Browns within 24-14.

After returning from holiday, it's likely you felt that the journey home by plane, car or train went much quicker than the outward journey, even though in fact both distances and journey are usually the same. So why the difference? According to a new study by Niels van de Ven and his colleagues it seems that many people find that, when taking a trip, the way back seems shorter. Their findings, published online in Springer's Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, suggest that this effect is caused by the different expectations we have, rather than being more familiar with the route on a return journey.
"People often underestimate how long the outward journey takes and this is therefore experienced as long," says Niels van de Ven from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. "Based on that feeling, the traveller expects the return journey to be long as well, and this then turns out to be shorter than expected." An overoptimistic prior estimation of the journey time thus leads to the illusion of the return journey being shorter.
This conclusion was based on three short studies where 350 people either took a trip by bus, by bicycle or watched a video of a person taking a bicycle ride. When the duration estimates were compared, respondents thought that the return journey on average went by 22 percent faster than the outward journey. The return trip effect was largest for participants who reported that the initial trip felt disappointingly long. Further, when one group of participants was told that the upcoming trip would seem long, the return trip effect disappeared. Ironically, telling participants that the upcoming trip was going to be very long led them to experience the trip as taking less time.
Up until now, a popular explanation for the return journey feeling shorter was that it was better known and so more predictable than the outward journey. However in their study, the researchers demonstrated that this explanation is unlikely. According to co-author Michael Roy from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, USA: "The 'return trip effect' also existed when respondents took a different, but equidistant, return route. You do not need to recognize a route to experience the effect."
Ultimately, the researchers hope to be able to explain more than just this return trip effect. The authors conclude: "These findings on the 'return trip effect' can help us make new predictions on how people experience the duration of tasks, even those unrelated to travelling."

Sexual satisfaction tied to overall 'successful aging' as reported by women age 60 to 89
ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2011) ? A study by researchers at the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California, San Diego finds that successful aging and positive quality of life indicators correlate with sexual satisfaction in older women. The report, published online in the August edition of the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, also shows that self-rated successful aging, quality of life and sexual satisfaction appear to be stable even in the face of declines in physical health of women between the ages of 60 and 89.
The study looked at 1,235 women enrolled at the San Diego site of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study, a major ongoing research program funded by the National Institutes of Health which, since 1993, has addressed causes of death, disability and quality of life in more than 160,000 generally healthy, post-menopausal women.
As the researchers expected, sexual activity and functioning (such things as desire, arousal and ability to climax) were negatively associated with age, as were physical and mental health. However, in contrast to sexual activity and functioning, satisfaction with overall sex life was not significantly different between the three age cohorts studied: age 60 to 69; 70 to 70; and 80 to 89. Approximately 67 percent, 60 percent, and 61 percent of women in these three age groups, respectively, reported that they were "moderately" to "very satisfied" with their sex lives.
"Contrary to our earlier hypothesis, sexual satisfaction was not significantly associated with age," said Wesley K. Thompson, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry with the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, and co-lead author along with UC San Diego medical student Lindsey Charo, BA. "Although the levels of sexual activity and functioning did vary significantly, depending on the woman's age, their perceived quality of life, successful aging and sexual satisfaction remained positive."
Sexual activity was significantly lower in older age cohorts. Of the women who were married or in an intimate relationship, 70 percent of those aged 60 to 69, 57 percent of those aged 70 to 79, and 31 percent of those aged 80 to 89 reported having had some sexual activity in the previous six months. While women who were married or living in an intimate relationship engaged in higher rates of sexual activity than those who were not in such a relationship, sexual activity still decreased across age cohorts.
The findings of this study confirm earlier published research from the UCSD Stein Institute suggesting that self-rated health changes little with age even when objective health indicators show age-associated decline.
"What this study tells us is that many older adults retain their ability to enjoy sex well into old age," said Thompson. "This is especially true of older adults who maintain a higher level of physical and mental health as they grow older. Furthermore, feeling satisfied with your sex life -- whatever your levels of sexual activity -- is closely related to your perceived quality of life." He added that "while we cannot assess cause and effect from this study, these results suggest that maintaining a high level of sexual satisfaction may positively reinforce other psychological aspects of successful aging."

MOSCOW (AP) ? The Russian head of the World Chess Federation said he spoke Tuesday with Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and that he remains in Tripoli and "wants to defend his country."
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has known Gadhafi for years. His visit to Tripoli this summer was the last time the Libyan leader was seen in public after NATO airstrikes began. The two of them were filmed playing chess together on June 12.
"In Arabic language, Moammar Gadhafi said that now he is in his country, he doesn't want to leave his homeland, he wants to defend his country and he wants to thank all people in the world who support his small country, small nation who fights against countries from NATO," Ilyumzhinov said in an interview with Associated Press Television News. "And after that he adds in English: Thank you very much!"
Gadhafi's whereabouts have been of intense interest as rebels have claimed control over much of Libya's capital and stormed his main military compound.
Ilyumzhinov said he was in his car when he got an unexpected phone call at about 6 p.m. Moscow time (1400 GMT, 10 a.m. EDT) from Gadhafi's son Mohammed, who told him he was with his father in Tripoli and the Libyan leader wanted to say a few words to him.
"Mohammed translated these sentences from Arabic into English and after that he said, Kirsan, I'm sorry, because of security I will call you later. This telephone conversation was about two-three minutes."
Gadhafi's voice was calm and he remains defiant, the Russian said.
The two men have known each other since at least 2004, when the chess federation, known by its French acronym, FIDE, held its world championship in Tripoli.
Ilyumzhinov, a wealthy businessman, was the leader of the predominantly Buddhist province Kalmykia from 1993 until he stepped down last October. He is known for eccentric behavior and once claimed to have been abducted by aliens.

MOSCOW ? North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's armored train arrived Tuesday in an eastern Siberian city for a summit with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
The North Korean leader stepped out of his train in Ulan-Ude, the capital of Buryatia, a Buddhist province near Lake Baikal, Russian news agencies reported. Kim's motorcade left town in the direction of Turka, a picturesque village on the shores of Baikal, the Russian ITAR-Tass news agencies reported.
The Yonhap news agency said the Medvedev-Kim summit is expected to take place Wednesday but did not elaborate.
There were signs that preparations were being made for Kim to visit Turka. The Baikal Daily website quoted residents as saying that a local police officer had been making the rounds to take down the names and addresses of all the people in the village.
Kim is expected to meet Medvedev this week near the Russian city of Ulan-Ude for talks that could focus on a natural gas pipeline deal. The pipeline would stream Russian natural gas through the North's territory to the South. South Korea media said the North could earn up to $100 million every year, but negotiations haven't reported much progress because of the nuclear dispute.
The JoongAng Ilbo newspaper, however, raised worries Monday that the North could abruptly shut down the gas supply depending on relations with the South.
The North Korean leader's visit is shrouded in mystery. A few people managed to take photos of Kim at his previous stop on Sunday, but heavy police cordons kept the press in Ulan-Ude off the train station.
It is Kim's first visit to his country's Cold War ally in nine years. North Korea is also pushing to restart six-nation nuclear disarmament talks in exchange for aid, after more than a year of tension during which it shelled a South Korean border island and allegedly torpedoed a South Korean warship.
Russian military officials, meanwhile, arrived in the North Korean capital on Monday for a five-day visit. The Russian Defense Ministry said the talks will focus on the renewal of military cooperation between the countries, possible joint exercises "of a humanitarian nature" and an exchange of friendly visits by Russian and North Korean ships, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported from Pyongyang.
Experts say North Korea could be seeking to assuage fears of instability as Russia considers building a natural gas pipeline through North Korea.
In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that Russia ? as "a partner in the six-party talks" ? shares the view we all have: "In order to get back to the talks, we need an improvement in North-South relations, and we need the (North) to show concrete steps toward denuclearization."
Kim's train crossed into Russia on Saturday morning and passed through Khabarovsk before heading west along a railway running roughly parallel with Russia's borders with China and Mongolia. The itinerary for his visit, expected to last about a week, has been largely kept secret because of what appears to be high security concern from North Korea.
But the Korea Herald newspaper stated bluntly a strain of thinking in Seoul in an editorial Tuesday: "It does not take genius to guess why North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is visiting Russia. Kim desperately needs economic aid."
The North, which has long experienced chronic food shortages, has been hit with heavy flooding in recent weeks.
