London 2012 Olympics: Locog bows to public pressure and opens eventing inspections to spectators

Spectator gates at Greenwich Park will now open earlier, at 7.45am, and the horse inspection will begin at the later time of 8.15am.

Spectator access is in the International Equestrian Federation?s (FEI) rules for Olympic Games in the interests of transparency.

Thomas deemed it ?disgraceful? and ?bureaucratic claptrap? that Locog had not arranged to accommodate them.

The initial horse inspection on July 27 is still out of bounds, due to logistical problems on the opening ceremony day, though it is arguably less important.

Ingmar De Vos, FEI secretary-general, said: ?The FEI is happy that Locog has revised the access schedule to allow spectators into the venue in plenty of time to watch the final horse inspection.

"July 31 is a particularly important day as it is the day when the first medals will be decided in equestrian sport?s centenary year.?

Colorado blaze: Most destructive in history (+video)

Leaving hundreds of homes in its wake, Colorado's fire has caused more damage than any other in the state. Aerial images clearly show the damage. Several western fires are still burning.

A raging Colorado?wildfire?that forced tens of thousands to flee destroyed an estimated 346 homes this week, making it the most destructive fire in the state's history, officials said Thursday.

As Anna Werner reports, they may be getting some assistance from Mother Nature.

From above, the destruction becomes painfully clear: Rows and rows of houses were reduced to smoldering ashes even as some homes just feet away survived largely intact.

On one street, all but three houses had burned to their foundations, said Ryan Schneider, whose home is still standing in a neighborhood where 51 others were destroyed.

"I was real happy at first. My wife was happy," he said. "The emotion of seeing the other homes, though, was instant sadness."

The aerial photos showing the scope of one of the worst fires to hit the American West in decades did little to help ease the concerns of many residents who still did not know the fate of homes.

Amid the devastation in the foothills of Colorado Springs, there were hopeful signs. Flames advancing on the U.S. Air Force Academy were stopped and cooler conditions could help slow the fire.

As of mid-day Thursday, the fire was 10 percent contained. The cost of fighting the blaze had already reached $3.2 million.

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said the 346 estimate could change. A fire in northern Colorado, which is still burning, destroyed 257 homes and until Thursday was the most destructive in state history.

For now, Bach said, the news of the destruction would make it very difficult for the city about 60 miles south of Denver.

"This is going to be a tough evening, but we're going to get through it," Bach said. "This community is going to surround them with love and encouragement ... We will move forward as a community."

More than 30,000 people frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night as the flames swept through their neighborhoods. While there's no indication yet the blaze claimed any lives, fire officials said they would search each home looking for possible remains.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary at an evacuated home. Belinda Yates and Shane Garrett were being held on charges including second-degree burglary and possession of methamphetamine.

Community officials were planning to begin the process of notifying residents Thursday that their homes were destroyed. For many residents, the official notification was a formality.

Residents recognize their street on aerial pictures and carefully scrutinize the images to determine the damage. Photos and video from The Associated Press and the Denver Post showed widespread damage.

Colorado Springs, the state's second-largest city, is home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center, NORAD and the Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites. They were not threatened.

Conditions were still too dicey to allow authorities to begin trying to figure out what sparked the blaze that has raged for much of the week and already burned more than 29 square miles.

President Barack Obama was to tour fire-stricken areas Friday as hundreds of locals and some tourists who were staying at Red Cross shelters hoped life would return to normal. Other stayed with friends and family.

Curry will remain at NBC News, saying she's been given a "fancy new title" to lead a reporting team. NBC said she will be anchor-at-large and national and international correspondent. Her work will occasionally resurface on "Today," and Lauer said she will be in London with the show for the Olympics.

He sat next to Curry, Al Roker and Natalie Morales on the couch as Curry choked back tears and apologized for being a "sob sister."

"It's not goodbye, not by a long shot," a grim-faced Lauer said.

Each of her colleagues recalled some of Curry's reporting from her "Today" tenure, but there was no video tribute. The "Today" website displayed "15 top Ann moments spanning her 15 years on TV," asking viewers to vote on their favorite.

"To all of you watching, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours," she said.

The trailer shows a nice shell shaded comic book style narration and we hope this translates into the narrative of the game as well. The trailer also shows off some gameplay where we can see spidey swinging through the city and taking down bad guys. How the story of the game ties into the movie is yet to be seen.

The iOS and Android game will be available on June 28 2012 a day before the movie hits theaters in India. There is no information available about the price of the game.

Gameloft has taken to making mobile games based on movies quite a bit. In the recent past, we have seen a game based on MIB3, a game based on the Dark Knight Rises and Ice Age.

There is also a console Amazing Spider-Man game in the works and will be available for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 when the movie releases.

On Sunday, Morsi was declared winner of Egypt's first presidential runoff following a tight race with Mubarak's last Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq. The campaigns deeply polarized the country.

Morsi has said that forming a national coalition government and a widely representative presidential team was a priority.

Ali anticipates the current military-backed government could remain in a caretaker role for a while. He says forming a new one "will take time."

CINEMA: Sun, sex, and neuroses? It?s Woody Allen in Rome

Woody Allen, perhaps the most ?New York? of all filmmakers, has spent much of the past decade cavorting around Europe, camera crew and star casts in tow.

Though the resulting movies have not all been winners (case in point: ?You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger?), the continent has, at times, proven to be fertile ground for the director: Who can forget the blade-like precision and unexpected sexiness of the London-set ?Match Point?? The lusciously captured locales and messy romantic entanglements of ?Vicky Cristina Barcelona?? Or ?Midnight in Paris?, with its flights of comic fantasy and rueful meditation on nostalgia?

In his new film, ?To Rome With Love?, Allen sets his sights on yet another Old World metropolis, and all the pieces look to be in place: an attractive international ensemble, golden-hued cinematography that makes you want to book your ticket to the Italian capital immediately, and a story full of characters ? both tourists and locals ? who fall in and out of love, trade neurotic barbs, and find themselves ensnared in absurd situations.

How disappointing, then, that ?To Rome With Love? turns out to be not only the most lackluster of Allen?s European efforts ? but one of the weakest entries in the prolific director?s vast and often brilliant body of work.

?Going native? and coming up empty-handed

This is a Woody Allen film ? which means that even at its least inspired things amble along pleasingly enough, thanks to a handful of sharp one-liners and some beautifully framed performers and locations.?But rarely has one of his movies been so overstuffed with tired subplots and bland characters, and never have his beloved themes ? complications of love and desire, fatalism, anxiety, ambition and life choices ? felt so lazily recycled and superficially explored.

The most engaging of four intercut but unrelated storylines are about Americans in Rome. In one, a young architect (Jesse Eisenberg of ?The Social Network) falls for his sweet girlfriend?s best friend, a hyper-articulate, narcissistic bisexual actress played by Ellen Page in the film?s most pungent performance. In the other, an aging opera director (played by Woody Allen himself) arrives in Rome with his wife to meet their daughter?s Italian fianc?, and ends up trying to turn the young man?s father into a star tenor. How exactly he goes about doing that makes for the film?s one truly original idea and its most poignant and amusing scene.

If Woody Allen had focused on those two narrative strands, ?To Rome with Love? might have been a charming trifle about American tourists under the spell of longstanding Italian traditions of love and art. But the filmmaker overplays his hand by trying to ?go native?, devoting half of his movie to broadly painted Italian characters whom he all but drowns in heavy-handed farce. Roberto Benigni shows up as a middle-class civil servant who inexplicably ends up a reality TV phenomenon, and a pair of rural newlyweds find their urban excursion disrupted by a sleazy film star and a call girl (played in full Mediterranean bombshell mode by Penelope Cruz).

The film?s Italian-language segments play like vague retreads of Fellini (one of Allen?s favourite directors) ? the paparazzi swarming Benigni?s character are straight out of ?La Dolce Vita?, while the country couple led astray by big-city temptation is a nod to the Italian director?s first film, ?The White Sheik? ? only without the wit, lyricism and undercurrent of despair. Allen is sending up Italy?s celebrity obsession (and exploring the Madonna-whore complex that seems to transcend cultural boundaries), but the satirical targets are so obvious and his strokes are so caricatural that one struggles to muster even a smile.

A superfluous Roman holiday?

After an advance screening of ?To Rome With Love? in Italy in April, Italian critics accused the director of relying on cultural stereotypes to portray their country. That?s not a problem in and of itself; ?Midnight in Paris? was about the image that Americans project onto the French capital and its dwellers, while ?Vicky Cristina Barcelona? turned on the clash between traditional American and European conceptions of life, love and pleasure.?The latter film also featured exaggerated Southern European archetypes ? Javier Bardem?s Latin lothario and Penelope Cruz?s passionate firecracker ? written and played with such unabashed verve that it was hard not to go along with the joke.

But as sun-kissed, sensual and appealingly chaotic as Woody Allen?s Rome appears, the filmmaker never gets his hooks in the city. He doesn?t exalt its beauty to the extent that he did with Paris, nor does he portray its charms as potentially life-changing as he did in Barcelona, or cast a coolly sardonic eye on its social customs as in his London movies. Allen essentially dumbs down Rome and the people in it. Indeed, many of the usual Woody Allen figures ? anxiety-prone intellectuals, charismatic but restless femme fatales, true-blue ing?nues ? are present in both American and Italian incarnations, but they?re more sketchily drawn than usual and the dialogue doesn?t sparkle or snap the way it should.

?To Rome With Love? leaves one with the unfortunate impression that the Italian capital was a somewhat superfluous stop on Allen?s European tour ? and that Allen knocked this film off without much thought or effort. The director is set to start shooting his next movie in San Francisco and New York this summer. Let?s hope his homecoming is a fruitful one.

Taliban siege at Kabul hotel kills at least 23

Elite Afghan police backed by NATO forces ended a 12-hour siege on Friday at a popular lakeside hotel outside Kabul. Msnbc.com's Alex Witt reports.

Updated at 7:38 a.m. ET Friday: KABUL ? Guests swam for their lives after five Taliban gunmen attacked a lakeside hotel in Afghanistan, killing at least 18 people and taking 50 others hostage in a siege lasting several hours, according to reports.

The militants -- armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns -- attacked the exclusive Spozhmai hotel in the Qargha Lake recreation area late Thursday, bursting into a private party and shooting dead hotel workers.?

The local police chief told NBC News that all five insurgents were killed. The Associated Press quoted local police as saying the civilian death toll was 18 - including hotel guards and a policeman - and likely to climb.?

Many terrified guests jumped into the lake in darkness to escape the carnage, according to Afghan officials and local residents.

Reuters journalist Hamid Shalizi reported?that the guests were a party of wealthy Afghans.

NBC News producer Cheryll Simpson said on Twitter that heavy gunfire could be heard from the hotel, which is about six miles from the center of Kabul.

The Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the hotel was used for "prostitution, alcohol and immorality,"?she reported.

For the deeply conservative Taliban, men and women who simply mingle, perhaps flirt, are condemned as pimps and prostitutes who deserve punishment sanctioned by God.

8-year-old cleaner tells of attack
Rasoul Khan, 8, who works as a cleaner at the hotel, told Reuters that Taliban gunmen ?were asking everyone where the pimps were. They shot anyone who would not co-operate with them."

The young boy had a facial injury.

With a quavering voice, Ebadullah, 14, another cleaner at the hotel, described how one of his friends wet himself when an insurgent demanded information on the whereabouts of other guests.

"He cried and said that he was an orphan and was the only bread winner for his family," he told Reuters.?

At a military hospital in Kabul where the wounded were treated, engineer Salder Rahi recalled how he had gone to the hotel to meet his brother and three friends. By the end of the ordeal, his sibling was among the dead.

"They opened fire on everybody. Everybody just ran. There was a party outside and I saw the father shot dead and his wife wounded," Rahi told Reuters.

Abdullah Samadi, 24, was just settling in at the hotel when he heard a huge blast from an RPG, followed by gunfire.?"We tried to escape, but we were surrounded by suicide bombers. We hid ourselves beneath a tree until morning. God protected us," he said.

The gunmen, Samadi said, had been closely watching their prisoners and searching for illegal stocks of wine.

"Around dawn they came closer to us and we had to jump in the water," he said. "We were there until 9 a.m. and then the situation got better and we slowly, slowly swam toward security forces."

Elite Afghan quick-response police backed by NATO troops freed the remaining hostages and killed the gunmen in an operation that only began in earnest after sunrise to help security forces avoid unnecessary civilian deaths in night-time confusion.

Two NATO attack helicopters could be seen over the single-story hotel building and a balcony popular with guests for its sunset views.

'Crime against humanity'
The incident again highlighted the ability of the Afghan Taliban to stage high-profile attacks even as NATO nations prepare to withdraw most combat troops by the end of 2014, leaving Afghan forces to take the lead against the insurgency.

Authorities are about midway through a transition process during which security responsibility is being handed from NATO-led foreign troops to Afghan forces.

"This is a crime against humanity because they targeted children, women and civilians picnicking at the lake. There wasn't even a single soldier around there," said General Mohammad Zahir, head of the Kabul police investigation unit.

Qargha Lake is one of Kabul's few options for weekend getaways. Restaurants and hotels that dot the shore are popular with Afghan government officials and businessmen, particularly on Thursday nights.

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

Guests at the Spozhmai must pass through hotel security before entering the hotel, where tables with umbrellas overlook the water, but security is relatively light for a city vulnerable to militant attacks.

Violence across Afghanistan has surged in recent days, with three U.S. soldiers and more than a dozen civilians killed in successive attacks, mostly in the country's east where NATO-led forces have focused their efforts during the summer fighting months.

Several well-planned assaults in Kabul in the past year have raised questions about whether the Taliban and their al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network allies have shifted tactics to embrace high-profile attacks targeting landmarks, foreigners and Afghanistan's elite, extending a guerrilla war once primarily waged in the countryside.

Afghan insurgents attacked Kabul's heavily protected diplomatic and government district on April 15 in an assault, eventually quelled by Afghan special forces guided by Western mentors, similar to one in September 2011.

President Hamid Karzai told a special session of parliament on Thursday that attacks by insurgents against Afghan police and soldiers were increasing as most foreign combat troops prepare to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.?
