Storyboard: Wired + Planet Money = Epic Multimedia Jobs Package

When Wired senior editor Bill Wasik and his pal Adam Davidson (who just happens to co-host NPR?s awesome economics series, Planet Money) teamed up for a special report about the future of work, big things were bound to happen.

Planet Money has a reputation for turning even the most arcane business concepts into gripping radio, and Wired?s designers are the best in the biz at eye-popping infographics. Still, neither of them expected to be pushing the boundaries of human knowledge about jobs in America.

?I thought you could just call somebody and say, ?Give us a list of the main geographic locations in America for a whole bunch of industries, and tell me how many people they employ,?? says Davidson. ?It turned out we really had to do a lot of work to construct that list. Every graph [we created] could be a Ph.D. dissertation. We?re creating datasets that the pros don?t have.?

It took six months of work, but their findings now grace the cover of the June issue of Wired (online version coming soon). Meanwhile, Davidson is taking to the airwaves with stories about the new face of work for This American Life, Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

In this edition of the Storyboard podcast we add another angle to this multiplatform jobs extravaganza, as host Adam Rogers sits down with Wasik and Davidson for the inside scoop on their report and how it happened. This is the future, people, so listen up!
