New NRA research shows that the majority of consumers find food safety important both at restaurants and at home. According to an August 2012 survey of 1,015 American adults, virtually all (96 percent) say it is important to them to know that the restaurants they visit train employees in food safety. In addition, more than eight out of 10 (81 percent) say they would be more likely to visit a restaurant that trains all its employees in proper food safety practices.
When it comes to cooking at home, virtually all consumers say they have at least basic knowledge of food safety. Sixty-three percent say they are aware of proper food safety practices and always follow them, while 33 percent say they are familiar with some food safety practices and follow those when they can.
"Food safety is a priority year-round for the nation's nearly one million restaurant and foodservice outlets and we celebrate that commitment with September's National Food Safety Month," said Paul Hineman, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association. "Our industry serves 130 million guests daily, making food safety training critical for restaurant employees. But, practicing food safety at home is just as important, which is why we're also providing tips for home cooks through this year's campaign."
NFSM highlights components of the NRA's ServSafe? Food Safety program ? the leading source of food safety training and certification for restaurant and foodservice industry professionals for nearly 40 years, with more than 5 million certifications issued. Because ServSafe is developed by the NRA, proceeds go toward helping improve the foodservice industry through research and education.
The NRA's survey showed that three-quarters (76 percent) of consumers say they would be more confident in a restaurant that displays food safety training certificates in public areas. Currently, less than two out of five (37 percent) have ever noticed food safety training certificates displayed in restaurants; younger consumers are much more likely to have noticed such certificates, as nearly half (49 percent) of 18 to 44-year olds say they have seen food safety certifications displayed, compared with only one-fifth (21 percent) of consumers age 55 and above.
This year's NFSM is sponsored by SCA, a global hygiene company and makers of the Tork? brand away-from-home paper products. The NRA selected SCA as the sponsor of the campaign due to the company's commitment to food safety education and dedication to hygiene product solutions.?

Water pipe smoking has the same respiratory effects as smoking cigarettes
ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? A new study published in the journal Respirology reveals that water pipe smoking, such as hookah or bong smoking, affects lung function and respiratory symptoms as much as cigarette smoking.
Most users of water pipes and many physicians believe that smoking through a water pipe filters out the toxic components of tobacco and is considerably less harmful than smoking cigarettes.
Led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady, MD, PhD, of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, researchers set out to compare lung function and respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers, deep or normal inhalation cigarette smokers, and non-smokers.
Three groups of smokers, including 57 water pipe smokers, 30 deep inhalation cigarette smokers (S-DI), and 51 normal inhalation cigarette smokers (S-NI) were identified and studied. In addition, 44 non-smokers were studied as a control group.
A questionnaire was administered to assess the prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms and lung function tests performed on smokers and control subjects using a spirometer.
Results showed an increased prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers and cigarette smokers. Similareffects of water pipe smoking and deep inhalation cigarette smoking on respiratory status were found.
Wheezing was present in 23% of water pipe smokers, 30% in S-DI, and 21.6% in S-NI. Chest tightness was present in 36.8% of water pipe smokers, 40% in S-DI, and 29.4% in S-NI. Cough was present in 21% of water pipe smokers, 36..7% of S-DI, and 19.6% of S-NI. Wheezing, chest tightness, and cough only occurred in non-smokers 9.1%, 13.3% and 6.8% respectively.
"Our study is the first report regarding the importance of the method of cigarette smoke inhalation with respect to effects on the respiratory system," Boskabady concludes. "Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep inhalation cigarette smokers."

But you'd be very short-sighted to see NeatCloud only for its syncing and storing capabilities, as its more important purpose is to help you organize and back up documents, receipts, warranties, and other important paperwork. NeatCloud, in partnership with its app NeatMobile (only on iOS at the moment, with Android support reportedly on its way) for uploading information on-the-go, bends to most any needs. Flexible folder structures, simple reporting tools, and a wealth of features for cataloging and categorizing your data and files, keep NeatCloud versatile. The only area where this digital filing cabinet falls short is it doesn't integrate with enterprise-level expense reporting, so it's tough to rely on NeatCloud and NeatMobile for business expenses if you work for a large organization. On the other hand, small business owners may be very well satisfied with NeatCloud's ability to spit out PDF expense reports.
What makes NeatCloud different from more traditional file-syncing services, such as Dropbox and SugarSync (both Editors' Choices) is what you put in them. NeatCloud is meant to help you create entries or digital records for things that aren't stored anywhere electronically but should be.
Prices and Options
The Neat Company, which owns NeatCloud, offers three versions of the service. The first is Personal ($5.99 per month), which supports one user and does not include Web expense reporting, the ability to share files and folders, or NeatMobile, the mobile app that lets you add new records to your NeatCloud account.
The next version, called Home & Office ($14.99 per month), supports two users and includes all those features that are missing from the Personal edition. The Home & Office version also adds more search capabilities and NeatCare Support. If you sign up for a 30-day free trial of NeatCloud (credit card required), this version is what you'll get.
Last is the NeatCloud Business ($24.99 per month), which has everything in the Home & Office version, but supports up to five users.
Getting Started With NeatCloud
To reach NeatCloud, you can log in through the website, where you'll see a very simple and self-explanatory dashboard (see the slideshow). NeatClouds opens with two buttons along the top, import and report, and three icons in a left rail below: Inbox, My Cabinet, and Trash.
The Inbox is pre-populated with four folders, all of which indicate a different method for uploading documents, such as "From Email," "From NeatMobile," and "From NeatScan," which refers to scanners that The Neat Company also sells (not tested for this review).
The area called My Cabinet houses additional folders and subfolders that you can set up and easily change at any time. I used NeatCloud to catalog my home possessions and homeowner paperwork so that I would have a backup of them in the event of a disaster, and I liked that the Cabinet space gave me complete control and flexibility. I named folders how I wanted and could edit them at the touch of a button, which was crucial in setting up a digital filing cabinet for the first time. Often, you don't know what organizational structure you need until you start making one and revising it, working by trial and error.
When I was ready to populate my folders, I found the Action button on the right side of the dashboard and the option to create item: receipt, document, or contact.
The receipt option is straightforward, with thirteen fields for various bits of relevant information, including vendor, expense category, date, payment type, and even a drop-down menu with tax categories and form names for the U.S. and Canada. It's never a requirement to fill in certain fields, which I appreciated. You can fill in as little or as much as you need, and you can edit the entry later, too.

NORTH ATTLEBORO ? a financial adviser fighting charges of defrauding seniors is running a website aimed at putting returning veterans into their own businesses.
Foxboro resident John Picini, who operates the Center for Senior Financial planning in North Attleboro, said the unrelated site is a legitimate attempt to connect veterans with careers and that no complaints have been lodged against his Internet businesses.
The website, associationforreturningsoldiers.com, displays pictures of Picini, 42, and says it is intended to help returning service people. a ?career opportunities? portion of the website links visitors to online video seminars promoting home-based businesses offering prospects of fast cash.
Picini strongly denies administrative charges brought last month by Secretary of State William Galvin?s office that he defrauded seniors of up to $2 million by offering them non-existent investments. the state has yet to hold a hearing on the charges.
The Association for Returning Soldiers is a for-profit business that offers veterans the chance to explore home-based business opportunities, Picini said. he said he culled the businesses represented on his site from a large number of such products because of their quality.
Picini, who also operates other Internet-based ventures, said he has yet to sell any packages through the Association for Returning Soldiers site.
The Foxboro resident says his motivation in setting up the site was based on his respect for the contributions of veterans, many of whom are returning home without jobs.
?I?m very proud of these guys who have served our country,? Picini said. ?There?s no way I would try to hurt or disrespect them.?
Picini says he also offers six free hours of consulting to veterans who join his program.
Links on the website invite visitors to view any one of three Internet ?webinars? focusing on businesses ranging from a web-based ?Automatic Money Machine? to a site promoting energy-saving devices and services.
Picini said he receives a payment when someone makes a purchase from one of the offers.
A portion of the site devoted to the Automatic Money Machine advertises an ?underground secret formula? seminar and claims that ?with my system you could make $500 to $3,500 per order? marketing specialized business and marketing DVDs and business concepts.
Picini said most of the promotional material on the site is boilerplate provided by the national association that markets it.
Packages are advertised on the website beginning at $695 for the ?bronze level? all the way up to $20,000 for the ?elite? package.
The website, which contains a number of testimonials, says it is not affiliated with the U.S. government or the military. It also bears a standard disclaimer saying there is no guarantee of making money.
Following an interview with the Sun Chronicle last week, a link to the material dealing with the Automatic Money Machine was removed from the careers portion of the website.
Neither the Boston office of the Better Business Bureau, nor the state Attorney General?s Office report receiving any complaints about the Association for Returning Soldiers, according to spokesmen.
Picini?s lawyer, Kevin J. O?Connor, said his client has not been the subject of any complaints related to his Internet businesses and that the charges connected to his other venture, the Center for Senior Financial planning, are unfounded.
?We think they?ve gotten it completely wrong,? said O?Connor, who noted his client has cooperated fully with authorities. ?We don?t agree that there was any intent to do wrong by anyone.?
Picini said his customers have been ?very supportive? and continue to have confidence in him.
Galvin?s office alleged that as owner of the Center for Senior Financial planning, Picini obtained millions of dollars from about 35 clients over a two-year period, and used proceeds for personal expenses.
Picini and his attorney declined to respond to specific allegations in the complaint, citing the ongoing legal process.
?All of this will be addressed when we have our day in court,? O?Connor said.

Entry is only ?2 per person, and children under-14 get in to the fair and all exhibits for free. Money will be raised across the two days of the fair and be donated to charities including; Child Flight, St Anne?s Hospice and Help for Heroes.

Ron Paul feted in raucous six-hour farewell rally
TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Thousands of die-hard Ron Paul supporters paid no heed to Tropical Storm Isaac on Sunday and held a marathon rally in Tampa to celebrate the 77-year-old congressman, who gave a farewell speech of more than an hour about his libertarian views.
As Republican National Committee officials scrambled to adjust the storm-shortened schedule for this week's convention to nominate Mitt Romney for president, Paul followers gathered across town at the University of Southern Florida's Sun Dome.
Paul, who is retiring from Congress this year after a colorful career and three failed White House runs, looked embarrassed as he got a prolonged standing ovation from an ear-splitting crowd as music thumped "Ron Paul, Ron Paul" in the background.
He praised his supporters for backing his vision of reduced government and increased personal liberties and urged them to continue the movement even now that his presidential bid had ended.
"The convention is very important this week ...(But) there's something even more important than all that and that is the cause that we're leading, the cause for liberty and the attention that we're getting right now," said the Texas congressman.
In his last speech of the long campaign season, Paul gave a rambling, 65-minute discourse that jumped from one topic to another and made reference to novels and history. But the crowd stayed engaged, chanting "President Paul, President Paul" and cheering his belief government should be cut.
Filling seats up to the basketball arena's rafters, the sign-waving crowd had already spent most of the five hours before Paul spoke listening to speakers bashing mainstream Republicans, the Federal Reserve and calling for an end to U.S. military involvement overseas.
A favored topic was getting rid of the Federal Reserve Bank. South Carolina state senator Tom Davis got the crowd revved up into a frenzy when he criticized the central bank chairman. "Ben Bernanke is a traitor and a dictator," Davis said to roars from the crowd as they stood and stomped on the floor.
Paul told The New York Times this weekend that he was not speaking at the convention because he did not want to give Romney a full-fledged endorsement. His son Rand, a U.S. senator from Kentucky who is seen as the future of the "Ron Paul Revolution," is speaking at the convention and has supported Romney.
REBELLIOUS SUPPORTERS
Republican officials and the Romney campaign were worried that Paul's often-rebellious supporters would stage an unlikely attempt to have him nominated at the convention, and distract attention from the party's message of defeating President Barack Obama on November 6.
But Paul backers, a unique combination of conservatives, the young, retired members of the military and independents, have been placated in part by the party putting ideas like an audit of the Federal Reserve -- something he has long supported -- onto the party platform.
Nevertheless, Paul and several of the rally's speakers Sunday afternoon blasted the national committee for changing rules to make it tougher for an outsider like him to get delegates to become a candidate with a realistic chance of advancing in the nominating process.
Paul failed to win any states in this year's Republican primary and caucuses votes but gathered up to 200 delegates, enough to cause disruption at the convention.
Paul's message of sharply reducing the role of government, scrapping the Federal Reserve and ending the U.S. military presence overseas resonated this election cycle more than in previous years. It was seen as attractive to conservatives and some disillusioned Democrats in times of a deep budget deficit and war weariness.
Paul joked about not being asked to speak at the convention.
"Today I was very excited. I got a call from the RNC," he said. "They said they changed their mind. They were going to give me a whole hour and I could say anything I want -- tomorrow night."
He paused to let the crowd realize convention events had been canceled for Monday night because of Tropical Storm Isaac. Then he said: "Just kidding, just kidding."

Promising new drug target discovered for treatment and prevention of heart failure
ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? A promising new drug target for the treatment and prevention of heart failure has been discovered by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, US.
The study was presented at the ESC Congress 2012 by principal investigator Professor Roger J. Hajjar, MD.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 5.8 million Americans suffer from heart failure and 670,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. One in five people with heart failure die within one year of diagnosis. Heart failure is most often treated with aggressive medical and device therapy, but has no cure. The most common symptoms of heart failure are shortness of breath, feeling tired, and swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, and sometimes the abdomen.
In this study presented at the ESC Congress 2012, researchers identified a new drug target that may treat and/or prevent heart failure. The team evaluated failing human and pig hearts and discovered that SUMO1 (small ubiquitin-like modifier), a small protein that regulates the activity of key transporter genes, was decreased in failing hearts. When the researchers injected SUMO1 into these hearts via gene therapy, cardiac function was significantly improved.
"This indicates that SUMO1 may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of heart failure," said Professor Hajjar, who is research director of Mount Sinai's Wiener Family Cardiovascular Research Laboratories.
Led by Professor Hajjar, the team has been evaluating the transporter gene SERCA2a in patients with severe heart failure as part of the CUPID (Calcium Up-regulation by Percutaneous administration of gene therapy In cardiac Disease) trial. When delivered via an adeno-associated virus vector -- an inactive virus that acts as a medication transporter -- into cardiac cells, SERCA2a demonstrated improvement or stabilisation with minimal side effects. But Professor Hajjar said: "We found that while injection with SERCA2a restored cardiac function, over time the new SERCA2a became dysfunctional. This indicated that something else upstream from SERCA2a was causing the dysfunction in the heart."
Dr Changwon Kho, PhD, and Dr Ah Young Lee, PhD, two experts in the study of cardiac proteins at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, identified SUMO1 as the regulator of SERCA2a, showing that it enhanced its function and improved its stability and enzyme activity. When Professor Hajjar and his team studied human and animal models, they found that when SUMO1 was decreased, SERCA2a became dysfunctional in human hearts, showing that SUMO1 plays a protective role. When the team injected SUMO1 as a gene therapy, they found that it protected SERCA2a from oxidative stresses that are prevalent in heart failure.
"Our experiments over the last four years beginning with the discovery of SUMO1 as an interacting protein of SERCA2a have shown that it plays a critical role in the development of heart failure," said Professor Hajjar. "In fact, SUMO1 may be a therapeutic target at the earliest signs of development and may be beneficial in preventing its progression, a much needed advance for the millions suffering from this disease."
Dr Lisa Tilemann extended the experiments performed in mice and rats in a preclinical model of heart failure in porcine models.
Professor Hajjar said: "We have now clearly shown that SUMO1 gene delivery can enhance cardiac function and stabilize the deteriorations of left ventricular volumes in large animals with severe heart failure. We have also shown that delivering SUMO1 and SERCA2a concomitantly can have synergistic benefits on overall function in heart failure."
Led by Professor Hajjar, the Mount Sinai team discovered the landmark potential of SERCA2a in 1999 and since then has been pursuing its potential as a treatment delivered via gene therapy. The next stages in the research include testing a novel gene therapy construct which will combine both SUMO1 and SERCA2a within one gene therapy vector that will enable the investigators to express both genes simultaneously. Similar to their efforts in the CUPID trial they will explore the delivery of SERCA2a and SUMO1 via gene therapy. Additionally, the research team has developed a cellular test to screen for compounds that may increase the interaction of SERCA2a with SUMO1, evaluating SUMO1 as an adjunctive therapy to SERCA2a.
Professor Hajjar concluded: "While this study re-affirms the importance of SERCA2a as a target in heart failure, our discovery of the critical role that SUMO1 plays in improving SERCA2a function in heart failure will hopefully lead to novel treatment strategies for patients with heart failure."
