Swiss woman 'gang-raped' in India

Officer M L Dhondi from Datia District Police says the couple were robbed before the attack

A Swiss woman has been gang-raped by a group of men in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police say.

The woman was camping with her husband at a village in Datia district on Friday during a cycling trip when they were attacked by eight to 10 men.

The assailants overpowered the husband before gang-raping his wife.

More than 20 people have been detained in connection with the attack, which has led the Swiss embassy to demand a thorough investigation.

The victim, who is reported to be 39 years old, has been admitted to hospital in Gwalior. She is conscious and has spoken to the authorities.

The tourists had been cycling from Orchha to Agra, to see the Taj Mahal, a distance of about 250km (155 miles), when they decided to camp overnight at a village.

One report cited the victim's husband as saying that the group of men had approached them at about 21:30 (16:00 GMT). They then began beating him with wooden sticks before tying him up and sexually assaulting his wife in front of him, he is reported to have added.

The assailants stole the couple's valuables, including 10,000 rupees ($185) and a laptop computer, before fleeing into the woods.

The incident comes three months after the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old female student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, which triggered widespread protests against the treatment of women in India.

On Monday, one of the suspects was found dead in prison. Police said Ram Singh hanged himself, but his family suspect he was murdered.

Dating Obsession: Is that possible? : Relationship Forum - Psych ...

Okay here is my background: I am a male and 27 years old and still live at home with my single mother. For the last year I have been a serial dater in recent months and what I mean by that is I go on many first dates and never get anything farther than that but have no reason behind it why I do this...
I tend to stir away from relationships although I know i want one.
My mind gives me reasons as to why a girl isn't good for me although I know she probably is good for me. I always contradict myself and my ego always wins and either she stops responding which gets me depressed or I just stop responding because I would rather talk to somebody else.

My friend always pokes fun because I tend to go on many dates and I don't know why I do the thing I do? I give the reason that I am getting older now and all my friends are in relationships while some are getting married. And I feel I should be at that point as well to be dating and hopefully getting married. I believe the rush that I have in my head wanting all that is making me fail with relationships. I tend to do online dating most of the time because I work too much and do not go out much minus my days off but I am always with my friends.

Recently in the summer my mom was going through some financial issues which got me very stressed and I used dating as a way to avoid the issues at home, it worked but I did it for the wrong reasons.

Do you think I have some kind of psychological issue that is going on that i do not know about? I took a couple depression tests online (just the basic tests for fun) and it said I had mild depression but nothing too serious. I do not have a very good relationship with my mom and tend to keep to myself even when my mother is home.

Is there any books i could potentially read on how to prevent this issue I am having or should I see a psychologist? Because I think this delima is ruining my life and I am afraid that I may be alone my whole life since I am obsessing about having a relationship?

This is my first post and I know that would make me a n00b but I quickly made an account in hopes I could have a sense of what I am dealing with or if anybody else out there has the same issue and how they overcome it?

Any information would be valuable to me and thank you in advanced.

A new study of animal swarms uncovers some new features of their collective behavior when overcrowding sets in

Swarming is the spontaneous organised motion of a large number of individuals. It is observed at all scales, from bacterial colonies, slime moulds and groups of insects to shoals of fish, flocks of birds and animal herds. Now physicists Maksym Romenskyy and Vladimir Lobaskin from University College Dublin, Ireland, have uncovered new collective properties of swarm dynamics in a study just published in EPJ B. Ultimately, this could be used to control swarms of animals, robots, or human crowds by applying signals capable of emulating the underlying interaction of individuals within the swarm, which could lead to predicted motion patterns elucidated through modelling.

The authors were inspired by condensed matter models, used for example in the study of magnetism, which were subsequently adapted to be biologically relevant to animal swarms. In their model, in addition to the ability to align with its neighbours, each model animal is endowed with two new features: one for collision avoidance and another preventing direction change at every step to ensure persistence of motion. The team performed computer simulations of up to 100,000 self-propelled particles, each mimicking an individual animal and moving at a constant speed on a plane surface.

They found that when the swarm becomes overcrowded, the globally ordered motion breaks down. At high density and when the nearest neighbours are within one step of each other, each animal can no longer decide on the safe direction of motion. Instead, it is busy correcting its motion to avoid collisions.

They also described, for the first time, a power law that quantifies the average degree of alignment in the direction of motion for animals within the swarm. The law describes how the alignment decays from the centre of the swarm, where animals can best judge the swarm motion due to their maximum number of neighbours, to the periphery.

Average UK broadband speeds hits double figures - Computer ...

CBR Staff Writer Published 14 March 2013

Broadband speeds across the United Kingdom are on the up, according to the industry's watchdog.

Back in November 2008 the average speed of the country's broadband was a sluggish 3.6Mbit/s, now five years on this has rocketed to 12Mbit/s.

Research carried out by Ofcom revealed the rise, which is equivalent to an increase of 234%, today 14 March.

There are still many parts of the UK not covered by broadband Ofcom finds the speeds are up as some consumers actively choose to upgrade to superfast broadband packages.

But also many are benefitting from improved speeds as a result of internet service providers' (ISPs') network upgrades.

Ofcom points out now more than three quarters, or 77%, of UK fixed-line residential broadband users were on packages with advertised speeds above 'up to' 10Mbit/s, up from 58% a year earlier.

The proportion of broadband connections classed as 'superfast', with an advertised speed of 'up to' 30Mbit/s or above, is also on the increase.

By November 2012, 13% of residential broadband connections were superfast, more than doubling from 5% in November 2011.

Ed Richards Ofcom chief executive said: "Our research shows UK consumers are adopting faster broadband packages to cater for their increasing use of bandwidth-heavy services such as video streaming.

"The increase in the average number of connected devices in UK homes is also driving the need for speed.

"Internet providers are working to meet consumer demand through network upgrades and the launch of superfast packages, giving consumers faster speeds and greater choice."

RolePlayGateway?

Hi, Your friendly neighborhood Create_Something here. I'm in search of, you guessed it, a long term RPing partner, whether it be for 1x1s or to collaborate ideas for small group RPs.

So first, a little about me and what I'm looking for in my partner. Please bare with me, I've never been good at these 'about me' things:
? Decent punctuation, everyone makes mistakes, including me, I just ask you do your best with proper grammar and spelling.
? Nothing less than a paragraph, please. I believe in quality over quantity, but even with that concept in place, there is no reason to post anything less than a paragraph. Even during my most writers block plagued days, I will at least post a paragraph. I ask you do the same.
? I'm pleasantly candid, don't be afraid to be the same. I'm always open to suggestions and critiques, and I try to compromise so that we're both having fun. If you're looking for a certain type of character to compliment or play opposite yours, I'll do my best to suit your needs. So don't be afraid to ask or suggest, and if I'm not diggin' it, I'll just say so. No harm, no foul, I expect the same from you.
? I suck at codes, if you haven't noticed already, please me patient with me.
? I prefer to play female characters, but I have been known to try a male on for size (minds outta the gutters please).
? Since my RPs tend to have adult content (language, violence and suggestive sexual situations) I' need my partner to be of age.
? I try to stay active, posting at least 2 - 3 times a week, sometimes multiple times in a day. Again, I ask the same, if you need to disappear into the world out yonder, just give me a heads up. There's nothing worse than just being left high and dry with no word. Actually, it quite pisses me off, I hope it does everyone.

I will NOT do a high school genre. I don't mind a school being present and important in the storyline, but I will not do the whole Twilight/Super hero/ Harry Potter high school thing. Its over played and has run out of its luster long ago. I'm a big fan of drama, conflict, action( in moderation), violence and twisted dark situations. Romance is okay as long as it's not forced, no love at first sight, for example. I enjoy scifi, modern fantasy and horror. I might be into some realism if its mafia or crime based, never really gave it a go. I'll do fandoms if I'm familiar with them, if not you'll have to explain the whole concept to me. Fandoms I love include Supernatural, Doll House, Push, and X-Men (or super being genre).

Like I said, I'm game and will try something if it's interesting enough. I have no specific plots in mind, so hit me up and lets collaborate.

Apple CEO Cook ordered to testify in e-books case

By Nate Raymond

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook must sit for a deposition in the U.S. government's lawsuit against the company over alleged price-fixing in the e-book market, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote in Manhattan granted the Justice Department's request to compel Cook to testify for four hours in the lawsuit, which accuses Apple of conspiring with five publishers to raise e-book prices.

The government had argued that Cook likely had relevant information about Apple's entry into the e-books market. It also said Cook likely had conversations related to e-books with former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who died in 2011.

Apple had fought the request, saying Cook's testimony would be "cumulative and duplicative" since the government had already deposed 11 other executives at the iPad maker.

Cote, on a teleconference, cited the death of Jobs as a key reason in ordering the deposition.

"Because of that loss, I think the government is entitled to take testimony from high-level executives within Apple about topics relevant to the government case," as well as to counter Apple's defense arguments, she said.

A spokesman for Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple is the only remaining defendant in the lawsuit, which was filed in April 2012 in U.S. District Court in New York.

The five publishers - Pearson Plc's Penguin Group, News Corp's HarperCollins Publishers Inc, CBS Corp's Simon & Schuster Inc, Hachette Book Group Inc and MacMillan - have already settled. The last to settle was Macmillan in February.

A trial is set for June. The government is not requesting damages but is seeking a finding that Apple violated antitrust law. It is also seeking an order blocking Apple from engaging in similar conduct.

TELECONFERENCE ARGUMENTS

During the teleconference, Orin Snyder, a lawyer for Apple at the law firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, called the government's request to depose Cook a "fishing expedition."

Snyder said the testimony of other executives should be sufficient in the case. Depositions of 11 other Apple executives have already taken place or been scheduled, according to an earlier letter Apple sent the judge.

"This effort to depose Mr. Cook, Apple's CEO, reflects the fact the government cannot meet its burden of proof in this case," Snyder said.

Lawrence Buterman, a Justice Department lawyer, said on the call that Cook had submitted a written declaration in the case in which he said he played no "meaningful role" in the events at issue.

The Justice Department wants to know what Cook "means by his qualifier," Buterman said.

The government believes it is likely, because of Cook's "position and closeness" with Jobs, that they had private conversations about e-books, Buterman said.

"It means Mr. Cook is the only potential source of information," he said.

The case is United States v. Apple Inc et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-02826.
