Honda sees sharp drop in profit on Thai floods (AP)

TOKYO ? Battered by the strong yen and supply disruptions from Thailand's floods, Honda said Tuesday that its net earnings in the October-December quarter tumbled 41 percent to 47.6 billion yen ($625 million) and projected a sharply lower full-year profit.

The Japanese automobile and motorcycle maker forecast it would earn 215 billion yen for the fiscal year through March, down nearly 60 percent from the 534 billion yen it earned the previous fiscal year.

Honda had scrapped its earnings forecast in October, when it reported its previous quarterly results, because the flooding in Thailand ? a key Asian production hub for Honda and many Japanese companies ? made the outlook too uncertain.

Honda stopped making cars at its automobile assembly plant in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, in October after it was damaged in the worst floods to hit Thailand in 50 years. The company said in a statement that it was making progress on draining the plant of flood water and cleaning up equipment, and that production was expected to resume by the end of March.

The flooding also disrupted the output at many Honda suppliers in Thailand, forcing it to reduce production as far away as the U.S. and Canada. Honda said production in neighboring Asian countries interrupted by the problems in Thailand was expected to return to normal by April.

All told, the problems related to flooding in Thailand have cost the company 260,000 vehicles in lost production worldwide, according to Tomohiro Okada, a company spokesman.

Quarterly sales slid 8 percent during the fiscal third quarter to 1.942 trillion yen.

The strong yen, which erodes Japanese exporters' foreign earned income when repatriated, also ate into the company's income. Declines due to unfavorable exchange rates accounted for 33.6 billion yen, or nearly half, of the 73.1 billion yen drop in net income before taxes reported the same quarter a year ago, Okada said.

A bright spot for the company was its motorcycle business, amid strong demand in emerging markets. Motorcycle sales rose 6.3 percent during the quarter to nearly 3.1 million units.

What Caring Can Do for Your Business

What can caring do for your business? We?re sure everyone who has ever patronized a business where folks don?t care knows the answer to this question. But just in case you need some more help on the subject, here are some thoughts on how you can take things to the next level.

PFT: Bears hire Chiefs' Emery as GM

joe-namathGetty Images

For many younger football fans, the name ?Joe Namath? doesn?t conjure memories of Broadway Joe or Super Bowl III but a drunken pass at ESPN sideline reporter Suzy Kolber during a December 2003 edition of Sunday Night Football.? His ?I wanna kiss you? moment became the stuff of TV legend, even making its way into an epic auto-tune mash-up from D.J. Steve Porter, who coincidentally now crafts similar projects for the four-letter network.

In an HBO documentary on Namath?s life, which debuted at 9:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Kolber addresses the incident for the first time.? Without saying ?don?t blame us, we didn?t know Joe was drunk,? she seems to try a little too hard to offer up not-so-subtle excuses for not knowing Joe was drunk, even though perhaps everyone involved should have known, or at least suspected, that Joe was drunk.

Especially once he started talking.

?Joe was escorted onto the field by a number of Jets personnel,? Kolber says of the subject of her eventual interview.? ?And what I recall is that he and I never really had a chance to chat, because he wouldn?t stand still.?

Kolber creates the impression that she didn?t have any opportunity to observe his behavior (Namath admits that he?d been drinking all day and night) until the interview started.? ?When we were really getting to close to when our producer wanted to have him on, I took his arm because I just didn?t want him to walk away,? Kolber says.

And even when the interview began, Kolber explains (with her trademark perky nonchalance) that no one thought anything was amiss as he gave a stumbling, incomprehensible answer to the first question:? ?What impresses you about Chad [Pennington]??

?I believe that anything anyone else has watched Chad play impresses me the same thing impresses them,? Namath said at the time, clumsily and awkwardly.

She attributed his off-kilter behavior to, yes, the weather.? ?When we first started talking and he was slow and deliberate in his speech,? Kolber says, ?what was going through my head was, ?Maybe it?s just really cold.??

But here?s the kicker from Kolber, the thing that made me think for the first time that ESPN adroitly has been able to avoid for more than eight years the question of how they put him on the air in the first place, and why they didn?t kill the interview after his initial rambling response.? ?None of the executives in the truck were alarmed either, because nobody said, ?Stop,?? Kolber says.? ?The direction in my ear was, ?Keep going.??

None of this changes the fact that Namath was at fault for drinking too much and agreeing to go on camera and then acting like a jerk by saying ?I wanna kiss you,? not once but twice.? But I?ve been involved in the TV side of this business long enough now to realize that there are (or at least should be) layers of folks who when trouble pops up can make good decisions in the blink of an eye, or even faster.? Still, until seeing Kolber?s roundabout effort to help ESPN continue to sidestep shrapnel for allowing the ?I wanna kiss you? moment to happen by not ending the interview (or by never doing it in the first place), I never made the connection.? Joe was always the bad guy, and ESPN and Kolber were always without blame of any kind.

After hearing Kolber?s explanation, I?m starting to think that maybe a few tougher questions should have been asked back in late 2003.? It?ll be interesting to see if any of those questions are asked now.

Business Headlines: NStar Merger; Facebook IPO ? CBS Boston

File Image (Photo by Darren McCollester/Getty Images)

BOSTON (CBS) ? The proposed merger of NStar and Northeast Utilities has been stuck for months now, but it appears analysts believe it will happen.

The proposal is worth $4.7 billion and Massachusetts regulators have already given it the o-k.

Regulators in Connecticut want to look it over as well, but analysts believe it will go through in the second quarter of this year.

Among other considerations, Connecticut?s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority wants to see how the merger would affect the utility?s ability to respond to a storm.

FACEBOOK IPO

Facebook is expected to file paperwork this week so it can sell stock to the public.

The social networking company is expected to raise as much as $10 billion in its initial public stock offering, which would value the company at $75 to $100 billion.

Some analysts predict shares could open at $38 to $40 apiece.

Facebook?s IPO would place it among the top ranks of the largest public companies in the world, including McDonalds and Bank of America.

Congress tries to police itself on insider trading

(AP) ? Aware that most Americans would like to dump them all, members of Congress hope to regain some sense of trust by subjecting themselves to tougher penalties for insider trading and requiring they disclose stock transactions within 30 days.

A procedural vote Monday would allow the Senate later this week to pass a bill prohibiting members of Congress from using nonpublic information for their own personal benefit or "tipping" others to inside information that they could trade on.

Insider trading laws apply to all Americans, but CBS' "60 Minutes" in November said members of Congress get a pass, citing investment transactions by party leaders and a committee chairman in businesses about to be affected by pending legislation.

The broadcast report raised questions about trades of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio; the husband of Democratic leader and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California; and Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

All three denied using any insider information to make stock trades, but the broadcast set off a flurry of efforts in Washington to deal with the public perception.

A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll of registered voters found 56 percent of them favor replacing the entire 535-member Congress. Other polls this year have given Congress an approval rating between 11 percent and 13 percent, while disapproval percentages have ranged from 79 percent to 86 percent.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said he's working on an expanded bill that would go beyond stock transactions and ban lawmakers from making land deals and other investments based on what they learned as members of Congress.

The Senate version of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act would subject any member of Congress who violates the ban on insider trading to investigation and prosecution by regulatory agencies and the Justice Department. It also directs the House and Senate ethics committees to write rules that would make violators subject to additional congressional penalties.

"We can start restoring some of the faith that's been lost in our government by taking this common sense step of making members of Congress play by the exact same rules as everyone else," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who with Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., wrote the bill "We must make it unambiguous that this kind of behavior is illegal."

President Barack Obama endorsed the bill in in State of the Union speech last week, saying he would "sign it tomorrow." Brown used that opening to briefly speak with the president as he was exiting the House chamber after Tuesday's address.

"The insider trading bill's on Harry's desk right now," Brown told Obama, referring to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "Tell him to get it out, it's already there."

"I'm gonna tell him," answered Obama. "I'm gonna tell him, I'm gonna tell him to get it done."

Obama raised the issue again in his radio and Internet address on Saturday.

"The House and Senate should send me a bill that bans insider trading by members of Congress, and I will sign it immediately. They should limit any elected official from owning stocks in industries they impact," he said.

(AP) ? Michigan State's Kirk Cousins and Wisconsin's Russell Wilson threw touchdown passes to lead the North to a 23-13 victory over the South in the Senior Bowl on Saturday.

Purdue kicker Carson Wiggs put it away with his third short field goal, a 28-yarder with 4:11 left in the showcase for senior NFL prospects.

Boise State's Kellen Moore led that clinching 13-play drive that consumed 8:36 with the help of a running clock.

It snuffed out a spark provided by South quarterback Nick Foles of Arizona, who started his career with Cousins at Michigan State.

Foles had gotten the South into the end zone by firing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Arizona teammate Juron Criner with 12:55 left in the game.

It was an up-and-down day for a crew of quarterbacks with sparkling college credentials, with a combined five interceptions.

Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead had a big day for the North. He set a Senior Bowl record in the first half with 98 yards on two late punt returns, and was named the MVP. Pead also rushed for a team-high 31 yards on eight carries.

Cousins completed 5 of 11 passes for 115 yards but threw an interception. Moore, who won an college-record 50 games as a starting quarterback, was 6-of-12 passing for 50 yards, and had a 23-yarder to set up the final field goal that put the North up two scores.

Wilson completed 4 of 7 passes for 45 yards with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones in the second quarter. He also threw an interception.

Arkansas receiver Joe Adams, the South's Most Outstanding Player, had six catches for 116 yards after losing a fumble on the opening drive. He had a 36-yarder and a 29-yarder in the third quarter.

Criner gained 77 yards on six catches.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner of Utah State had seven tackles and an interception and was the North's Most Outstanding Player.

Wiggs made kicks of 27, 32 and 28 yards while missing a 37-yarder in the final minutes.

Foles almost got the South back in it earlier, but his fourth-down pass from the 13 was incomplete with 3:59 left in the third quarter.

He had the best stat line of the six quarterbacks. Foles was 11-of-15 passing for 136 yards and the TD, and was the only South quarterback who wasn't picked off.

San Diego State's Ryan Lindley was 10 of 21 for 103 yards and also was intercepted once. Oklahoma State's 28-year-old Brandon Weeden started for the South but was picked off twice on nine attempts, completing five passes for 56 yards.

Cousins put the North ahead 20-6 early in the second half with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Arizona State's Gerell Robinson. The 6-foot-3, 223-pound Robinson caught it coming across the middle and raced down the right sideline.

It was the second time on the drive Cousins had thrown for a nice gain on third down, hitting T.J. Graham (North Carolina State) for 22 yards earlier.

The North's Kendall Reyes of Connecticut had two sacks.

Sudan rebels say holding 29 Chinese workers (Reuters)

KHARTOUM (Reuters) ? Rebels in Sudan's oil-producing border state of South Kordofan said on Sunday they were holding Chinese workers for their own safety after a battle with the Sudanese army.

The army has been fighting rebels of the SPLM-N in South Kordofan bordering newly independent South Sudan since June. Fighting spread to the northern Blue Nile state in September.

"We are holding 29 Chinese workers after a battle with the army yesterday," a spokesman for the SPLM-N said. "They are in good health. We are holding them for their own safety because the army was trying to strike again."

The army said rebels had attacked the compound of a Chinese construction company operating in the area between the towns of Abbasiya and Rashad in the north of the state and captured 70 civilians.

"Most of them are Chinese. They (the rebels) are targeting civilians," said army spokesman Sawarmi Khalid Saad.

He said there had been no battle in the area and the army was now trying to rescue the civilians.

China's foreign ministry urged Sudan to guarantee the safety of Chinese personnel during the search and rescue process, according to a statement released in Beijing.

South Kordofan is the main oil-producing state in Sudan, while Blue Nile is rich in minerals such as chrome.

The fighting in both states has forced about 417,000 people to flee their homes, more than 80,000 of them to South Sudan, according to the United Nations.

Both states contain large groups who sided with the south in a decades-long civil war, and who say they continue to face persecution inside Sudan since South Sudan seceded in July.

The SPLM is now the ruling party in the independent south and denies supporting SPLM-North rebels across the border.

Events in South Kordofan and Blue Nile are difficult to verify because aid groups and diplomats are banned from areas where fighting takes place.

SPLM-North is one of a number of rebel movements in underdeveloped border areas who say they are fighting to overthrow Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and end what they see as the dominance of the Khartoum political elite.

Sudan and South Sudan, which still have to resolve a range of issues including the sharing of oil revenues, regularly trade accusations of supporting insurgencies on each other's territory.

Boko Haram leader tape threatens Nigeria forces (Reuters)

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? In an audio tape posted on the Internet, the purported leader of the violent Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram threatened to kill more security personnel and kidnap their families, and accused U.S. President Barack Obama of waging war on Islam.

In the 45-minute tape released on Thursday, a man's voice in the main northern Hausa language claimed to be Abubakar Shekau. He said President Goodluck Jonathan would fail to stop their insurgency.

Boko Haram's attacks have become more sophisticated and deadly in recent weeks in Africa's top oil producer. A series of gun and bomb attacks killed 186 people in Nigeria's second city of Kano last Friday.

"We were responsible for the attack in Kano, I gave the order and I will do it again and again. Allah gives us victory," the voice said.

If confirmed as authentic, the second tape in just under three weeks by Shekau would suggest he wants to use to media to establish his authority over the group, security sources said.

Shekau is said to have taken over control of Boko Haram, which wants sharia law more widely applied across Nigeria, after the sect's founder Mohammed Yusuf was killed in police custody in 2009 following an uprising in which 700 people were killed.

However, security experts say it is unclear whether Boko Haram really has a unified leadership.

Boko Haram, a movement loosely modeled on the Afghan Taliban whose name translates from the northern Hausa language as "Western education is sinful," has been behind almost daily killings in its home base in the largely Muslim northeast, and occasionally in the capital Abuja.

The Kano attack was their deadliest strike yet.

"We attacked the securities base because they were arresting our members and torturing our wives and children. They should know they have families too, we can abduct them. We have what it takes to do anything we want," the voice on the tape said.

But he denied responsibility for the civilian casualties, which police said made up 150 of the deaths.

"We never kill ordinary people, rather we protect them. It is the army that rushed to the press to say we are the ones killing civilians. We are not fighting civilians. We only kill soldiers, police and other security agencies," he said.

In August last year, the sect carried out a suicide car bombing of the United Nations headquarters in the capital Abuja that killed 24 people. On Christmas Day it masterminded coordinated explosions against Christians, including one at a church near Abuja that killed at least 37 people.

In a previous video tape on January 11, Shekau defended attacks against Christians.

President Jonathan told Reuters on Thursday that Boko Haram had made contact with other jihadist groups operating in the region, echoing views by security experts that AQIM has trained and supported some Boko Haram militants, though its interests remain local.

He challenged the group to identify themselves and state their demands as a basis for talks.

The tape hinted that Boko Haram was part of a global jihad against Western interests.

"In America, from former President George Bush to Obama, the Americans have always been fighting and destroying Islam," he said. "They have tagged us terrorists and they are paying for it. It is the same in Nigeria, and we will resist."

Forrester: Apple makes strides into businesses, users iWork hard for the money

Forrester has announced the results of its latest survey, which encompassed 10,000 enterprise computer users, across 17 countries. It looked at the degree of Apple product adoption in businesses and support for them within IT services. There's plenty to chew on, but here's the big one; over a fifth of those surveyed uses an Apple product for work. This, however, includes workers using their personal devices for work tasks, with 11 percent using their iPhone, 9 percent their iPad and 8 percent working on their Macs. Half of the enterprises included in Forrester's survey plan to increase the number of Macs used by 52 percent, while nearly half of the firms are already issuing Apple PCs to employees, gaining even more traction within IT departments in the US and Western Europe. Unsurprisingly, given its premium pricing, those using Apple gear are more likely to be higher paid, while also (paradoxically) younger and in a senior rank. More specifically, 43 percent of those making over $150,000 a year use an iPhone, iPad or Mac. No cause or effect here, ladies and gents, but we'll be putting in our expense claim for a new set of business iPads very soon.

Tely Labs TelyHD

You can get Skype on nearly every computer, tablet, and smartphone out there, but unless you have a few very specific devices the popular video chat software hasn't been available on HDTVs. Some Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung HDTVs run Skype with their respective webcam accessories; video chat is possible through Windows Live Messenger on an Xbox 360 and Microsoft Kinect; and you can chat over Google Talk with a Biscotti ($199, 3 stars) (or use Biscotti's own service). Overall, though, ubiquitous video and voice chat service is underrepresented. Tely Labs aims to change that with the TelyHD, a webcam and Skype device that plugs into your HDTV and offers video chatting out of the box. It works with any HDTV and most Wi-Fi networks, and is just like having Skype on your screen. It's a bit expensive at $249.99 (direct), but it stands as the best, easiest way to get video chat on your couch.

Design
The camera measures 2.7 by 10.8 by 2.9 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.1 ounces, making it about the same size as the Microsoft Kinect. It looks a lot like the Kinect, in fact, even if it has only one sensor. The large, wide camera component on a base makes it resemble the gaming accessory and video chat device much more than any webcam. The TelyHD camera can pivot up and down, but unlike the Kinect it can't pan, and you have to manually move the camera to adjust its position, since there's no motorized camera adjustment.

The front of the camera has an indicator light and button for answering calls, which is very handy when you're watching something else. Since the camera doesn't have an HDMI pass-through, you need to actively switch to the camera to make or receive calls. Even if your display isn't set to the camera's input, the button will flash and speakers on the side will ring with the Skype call tone, letting you know to change inputs and accept the call. A sliding door over the lens lets you cover it when you want to ensure privacy. If you don't want to use the remote, or can't find it quickly enough, the button answers Skype calls. The back of the camera holds a mini-HDMI output (it comes with a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable), an Ethernet port, an SD card slot, and USB and miniUSB ports.

The visual interface looks like an HDTV-friendly version of Skype, with contacts shown like large icons, and a sidebar on the left to show additional information. The graphics are nearly identical to Skype for the PC, with the same contact and status icons. All text has to be entered with the remote, which makes adding contacts tedious. This is a problem with most set-top boxes that accept text and don't have a keyboard, though, and since the camera doesn't support text chat over Skype it's not a major issue. The included membrane remote includes buttons for navigating lists, answering and hanging up phone calls, and bringing up the menu.

Performance
Video quality is very good for a webcam. The TelyHD isn't high-definition capable, but it's fairly sharp and smooth over Wi-Fi. When calling people on multiple webcams and on an iPhone 4, my picture came in clearly on both computer monitors and the Retina display. The picture quality on my end wasn't as good, though, because of the resolution limitations of a sub-high definition webcam and of the iPhone 4's front-facing camera. It's still legible, but very fuzzy when put on a 42-inch HDTV, whereas a high definition webcam looked quite nice on the screen.

Since the TelyHD only uses Skype, you can't call people through other chat products like Google Talk or Biscotti users. On the other hand, Skype is the? most popular video chat software available, and it's free to download to any computer or mobile device user, so it's not a big setback. If you have friends with a webcam, you can call them on the TelyHD over Skype; all they have to do is download the software. The TelyHD can also share photos with other TelyHD users: Load a memory card or a USB drive into the camera and you can share photos during video calls.

The TelyHD is pricey. But if you want to video chat on your HDTV, $250 gets you a self-contained unit that can handle Skype well, produces good video, and even rings when you get calls. It doesn't have the pass-through video feed of the Biscotti, but the improved video quality and Skype support both make up for it and for the $50 increase in price. If you have a Panasonic HDTV, you could pay less and get the TY-CC10W webcam. Otherwise, the TelyHD is the best option for video chats with your HDTV on Skype.

(AP) ? Demi Moore smoked something before she was rushed to the hospital on Monday night and was convulsing and "semi-conscious, barely," according to a caller on a frantic 911 recording released Friday by Los Angeles fire officials.

The woman tells emergency operators that Moore, 49, had been "having issues lately."

"Is she breathing normal?" the operator asks.

"No, not so normal. More kind of shaking, convulsing, burning up," the friend says as she hurries to Moore's side, on the edge of panic.

The recording captures the 10 minutes it took paramedics to arrive as friends gather around the collapsed star and try to comfort her as she trembles and shakes.

Another woman is next to Moore as the dispatcher asks if she's responsive.

"Demi, can you hear me?" she asks. "Yes, she's squeezing hands. ... She can't speak."

When the operator asks what Moore ingested or smoked, the friend replies, but the answer was redacted.

"Some form of ... and then she smoked something. I didn't really see. She's been having some issues lately with some other stuff. So I don't know what she's been taking or not," the friend says.

The city attorney's office advised the fire department to redact details about medical conditions and substances to comply with federal medical privacy rules.

"She smoked something. It's not marijuana. It's similar to incense," the friend says to the 911 operator.

While Moore's friends don't say exactly what she smoked, an increasingly popular drug known as Spice is sometimes labeled as "herbal incense."

Spice is a synthetic cannabis drug and also called K2. It's sold in small packets over the Internet, in smoke shops and at convenience stores. The packaging sometimes reads "not for human consumption" to conceal its purpose.

In 2011, there were twice as many spice-related calls to Poison Control Centers nationwide as in the previous year, according to the National Office of Drug Control Policy.

The adverse health effects associated with synthetic marijuana include anxiety, vomiting, racing heartbeat, seizures, hallucinations, and paranoid behavior.

Asked if Moore took the substance intentionally or not, the woman says Moore ingested it on purpose but the reaction was accidental.

"Whatever she took, make sure you have it out for the paramedics," the operator says.

The operator asks the friend if this has happened before.

"I don't know," she says. "There's been some stuff recently that we're all just finding out."

Moore's publicist, Carrie Gordon, said previously that the actress sought professional help to treat her exhaustion and improve her health. She would not comment further on the emergency call or provide details about the nature or location of Moore's treatment.

The past few months have been rocky for Moore.

She released a statement in November announcing she had decided to end her marriage to fellow actor Ashton Kutcher, 33, following news of alleged infidelity. The two were known to publicly share their affection for one another via Twitter.

Moore still has a Twitter account under the name mrskutcher but has not posted any messages since Jan. 7.

Meanwhile, Millennium Films announced Friday that Sarah Jessica Parker will replace Moore in the role of feminist Gloria Steinem in its production of "Lovelace," a biopic about the late porn star Linda Lovelace. A statement gave no reason for the change. The production, starring Amanda Seyfried, has been shooting in Los Angeles since Dec. 20.

During the call, the woman caller says the group of friends had turned Moore's head to the side and was holding her down. The dispatcher tells her not to hold her down but to wipe her mouth and nose and watch her closely until paramedics arrive.

"Make sure that we keep an airway open," the dispatcher says. "Even if she passes out completely, that's OK. Stay right with her."

The phone is passed around by four people, including a woman who gives directions to the gate and another who recounts details about what Moore smoked or ingested. Finally, the phone is given to a man named James, so one of the women can hold Moore's head.

There was some confusion at the beginning of the call. The emergency response was delayed by nearly two minutes as Los Angeles and Beverly Hills dispatchers sorted out which city had jurisdiction over the street where Moore lives.

As the call is transferred to Beverly Hills, the frantic woman at Moore's house raises her voice and said, "Why is an ambulance not on its way right now?"

"Ma'am, instead of arguing with me why an ambulance is not on the way, can you spell (the street name) for me?" the Beverly Hills dispatcher says.

Although the estate is located in the 90210 ZIP code above Benedict Canyon, the response was eventually handled by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

By the end of the call, Moore has improved.

"She seems to have calmed down now. She's speaking," the male caller told the operator.

Moore and Kutcher were wed in September 2005.

Kutcher became a stepfather to Moore's three daughters ? Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle ? from her 13-year marriage to actor Bruce Willis. Moore and Willis divorced in 2000 but remained friendly.

Moore and Kutcher created the DNA Foundation, also known as the Demi and Ashton Foundation, in 2010 to combat the organized sexual exploitation of girls around the globe. They later lent their support to the United Nations' efforts to fight human trafficking, a scourge the international organization estimates affects about 2.5 million people worldwide.

Moore can be seen on screen in the recent films "Margin Call" and "Another Happy Day." Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on TV's "Two and a Half Men" and is part of the ensemble film "New Year's Eve."

Democrats and Republicans Finally Agree on One Thing: Gingrich Must Go (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | With the all-important Florida primary approaching, Democrats find themselves in the same position as most prospective Super Bowl viewers. Although the majority of hardcore gridiron fans no longer have a team in the playoffs, they are inevitably drawn to choose sides in the big game. If it's not the Super Bowl, the Florida primary can make a case for being the conference championships of politics, since the winner may well end up with his party's nomination.

Whom should Democrats pull for in this epic struggle?

The obvious choice would be to get behind Newt Gingrich, since all the polling data shows Obama has a better chance of defeating Gingrich than Mitt Romney. However, the Democrats I know are either deeply agonizing over the prospect of a Gingrich candidacy or actively rooting for Romney. Why?

It is not, as one might think, the "be careful what you wish for" theory. That is, no Democrat that I have talked to is concerned about a repeat of 1980, where the candidate they all wanted as the Republican nominee -- Ronald Reagan -- ended up trouncing Jimmy Carter. No one thinks Newt Gingrich is Ronald Reagan.

Instead, these Democrats seem reluctant to pull for a Gingrich victory in Florida for reasons that Peggy Noonan, a former Reagan speechwriter, pointed out in a recent Wall Street Journal editorial when she dubbed Gingrich a "human hand grenade" constantly in danger of blowing up. Recalling that Gingrich shut down the government over a perceived slight on Air Force One, the Democrats I have spoken to fear the sort of retribution the former Speaker might try to exact and from whom were he suddenly thrust into the role of most powerful man in the world. As a result, they find themselves pulling for a Romney victory even though in so doing they are at least in spirit supporting the man they believe has a better chance of beating President Obama.

In putting the interests of their country ahead of party, these Democrats seem to be following the lead of the president himself. During the debt ceiling crisis, Obama dropped his demand for a combination of spending cuts and revenue increases when it became clear the tea party members in Congress were willing to allow the government to default on its debt unless budget cuts alone were used to offset the debt ceiling increase. Rather than risk the harm to the country this would entail, the president essentially caved into their demands, alienating many in his own base and perhaps endangering his chances for a second term. Just so, the Democrats pulling for Romney seem to believe that there are things more important than the President's reelection.

I am not implying that Democrats alone possess the patriotism to put party interest ahead of country. According to Politico, the Republican establishment has started to come out in full force against a Gingrich candidacy. In these partisan times, it is good to see the two parties united over something.

Stocks slip after US economic growth disappoints (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks were drifting lower Friday after the government reported the U.S. economy grew at a slower pace than economists had expected in the fourth quarter.

If prices don't reverse, the Dow Jones industrial average will end the week down, the first time that's happened in 2012. The Dow has risen for three weeks in a row and is up 4 percent this year.

The Dow fell 80 points, or 0.6 percent, to 12,656 at noon. The S&P 500 index fell 4 points to 1,314. The Nasdaq composite edged up 5 to 2,810.

The Commerce Department said the economy grew at a 2.8 percent annual rate in the final three months of last year. Economists had expected 3 percent growth.

Among stocks making big moves, Chevron Corp. fell 3 percent, the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow average, after the energy company's fourth-quarter revenue and earnings per share came in well below what analysts were expecting. Oil and natural gas production declined in the quarter.

The declines were broad, with all ten sectors of the S&P down.

Ford Motor Co. fell 3 percent after reporting disappointing fourth quarter earnings due to weak sales in Europe. The company said its results were also hurt by trouble at parts suppliers in Thailand due to flooding there.

Starbucks Corp. fell 2.6 percent after reporting late Thursday that that full year results were likely to come in less than expectations. Procter & Gamble Co., which makes Tide, Crest and other consumer products, fell 1 percent after cutting its earnings outlook.

Legg Mason fell 6 percent after the investment management company's earnings fell in half as clients pulled money out of the firm. Legg Mason's earnings of 20 cents per share were well below the 25 cents per share that analysts were expecting, according to FactSet.

Jumping Spiders' Unique Vision Revealed (LiveScience.com)

Jumping spiders, which hunt by pouncing on their prey, gauge distances to their unsuspecting meals in a way that appears to be unique in the animal kingdom, a new study finds.

The superability boils down to seeing green, the researchers found.

There are several different visual systems that organisms use to accurately and reliably judge distance and depth. Humans, for example, have binocular stereovision. Because our eyes?are spaced apart, they receive visual information from different angles, which our brains use to automatically triangulate distances. Other animals, such as insects, adjust the focal length of the lenses in their eyes, or move their heads side to side to create an effect called motion parallax ? nearer objects will move across their field of vision more quickly than objects farther away.

However, jumping spiders?(Hasarius adansoni) lack any kind of focal adjustment system, have eyes that are too close together for binocular stereovision and don?t appear to use motion parallax while hunting. So how are these creatures able to perceive depth?

Researchers in Japan have now discovered that the arachnids accurately sense distances by comparing a blurry version of an image with a clear one, a method called image defocus.

Jumping spiders have four eyes densely packed in a row: two large principal eyes and two small lateral eyes. The spider uses its lateral eyes to sense the motion of an object, such as a fly, which it then zeros in on using its principal eyes, Akihisa Terakita, a biologist at Osaka City University in Japan and lead author of the new study, explained in an email to LiveScience.

Rather than having a single layer of photoreceptor cells, the retinas in the spider?s principal eyes have four distinct photoreceptor layers. When Terakita and his colleagues took a close look at the spider's principal eyes, they found that the two layers closest to the surface contain ultraviolet-sensitive pigments, whereas the deeper layers contain green-sensitive pigments.

However, because of the layers' respective distances from the lens of the eye, incoming green light is only focused on the deepest layer, while the other green-sensitive retinal layer receives defocused or fuzzy images. The researchers hypothesized that the spiders gauge depth cues from the amount of defocus in this fuzzy layer, which is proportional to the distance an object is to the lens of the eye.

To test this, they placed a spider and three to six fruit flies?in a cylindrical plastic chamber, housed in a white styrene foam box. They then bathed the bugs in different colored lights: If the defocus of green light is important to the spiders, then they should not be able to accurately judge jumping distance in the absence of green light.

Sure enough, the spiders could easily catch the flies under green light, but consistently underestimated their jumps under red light (which doesn't contain shorter-wavelength light, such as green and blue). The researchers suggest that green light is just right to produce the image defocus necessary to gauge distances, unlike other wavelengths of light.

The team doesn?t know if any other animals employ similar depth-perception techniques, though they think the findings could have important implications for the future design of visual systems in robots.

"Further investigation of the optics, retinal structure and neural basis of depth perception in jumping spiders may provide biological inspiration for computer vision as well," they write in their study, published in the Jan. 27 issue of the journal Science.

'Real Housewife' Kim Richards: 'I'm an alcoholic'

Bravo

"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" regular Kim Richards admits she's alcoholic on the show's upcoming, three-part reunion special.

By Ree Hines

There was no shortage of real-life drama and shockers on the second season of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," and it seems the same will hold true for the upcoming, three-part reunion special.

The biggest jaw dropper in store for regular viewers of the 90210 action might just be one simple statement from embattled "Housewife" Kim Richards.

In a sneak peek for the episodes, a serious Richards can be seen telling host Andy Cohen, "I'm an alcoholic."

Warning: The video contains racy comments typical of "The Real Housewives," but perhaps not so typical of your workplace. Adjust the volume accordingly.

The sentiment isn't shocking ? not to fans, who've watched Richards' troubling behavior on-screen, or to castmates, some of whom, including her sister Kyle, have said as much themselves. But the blunt statement marks a first for Richards, who's long denied the problem.

What a difference rehab makes.?

As for that rehab experience, fellow "Housewife" Adrienne Maloof applauds Richards for taking action.

?It takes a lot of courage to do what she has done," she said. "It?s a step in the right direction."

For more from the Beverly Hills gang, tune into "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Reunion." Part one airs Jan. 30, part two on Feb. 6, and the final installment hits Bravo on Feb. 13.

Will you tune in to learn what else Kim and the rest of the "Housewives" have to say? Tell us on our Facebook page.

House Dems raised $61M in donations last year (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says it raised $61.4 million last year, claiming a good showing for a party in the minority.

The committee is the political arm of House Democrats. The fundraising blitz gives it $11.6 million in cash on hand to help Democrats win House seats in November.

The group's GOP counterpart is the National Republican Congressional Committee. It would have to raise about $9.6 million to match that figure. Those fundraising numbers are not yet available.

A full report for the House Democrats' committee will be filed with the Federal Election Commission by Jan. 31.

UK economy shrinks by 0.2 pct in 4th quarter (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's economy shrank by 0.2 percent in the last three months of 2011, official data showed Wednesday, a worse than expected result that raises fears of a recession and could see the Bank of England push for more monetary stimulus.

The market consensus had been that the economy would contract by only 0.1 percent in the quarter. For the year, GDP grew by just 0.8 percent, the Office for National Statistics said.

The fourth-quarter drop is likely to confirm analysts' belief that the Bank of England will authorize spending more billions next month to stimulate the economy.

Minutes of the January meeting of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee showed that, as expected, the nine members had been unanimous in voting not to approve more stimulus.

The Bank had indicated that it would take at least through January to spend the 75 billion pounds in asset purchases approved in October.

Some analysts expect the bank to authorize more purchases next month.

The GDP report showed that Britain's big services sector didn't grow at all in the fourth quarter, while output of production industries, including factories, fell by 1.2 percent.

The International Monetary Fund this week cut its forecasts for the U.K. economy, predicting growth of only 0.6 percent compared with 1.6 percent previously.

Keith Urban's voice in good shape after surgery (Reuters)

NASHVILLE (Reuters) ? Country singer Keith Urban says that during the three weeks he was ordered not to speak late last year after vocal surgery, he learned a few valuable lessons about communication including this: sometimes people talk too much.

"I was amazed at how much noise there is on television and in conversations," Urban told Reuters on Wednesday. "It's rubbish. We could strip away so much ... be more succinct ... and still make our point.

"I realized I'm as guilty as anybody. I learned that when you have to write stuff down you get real particular as to how and what you want to say."

The singer underwent surgery in November to remove polyps from a vocal chord, causing his doctor put him on vocal rest for three weeks and bar him from singing until February.

Urban, who has nothched a No. 1 single "Long Hot Summer" with co-writer Richard Marx, said that while he was unable to talk, his other senses improved, especially hearing.

He thought ahead, too, and prepared for how he would communicate with his three-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose. He recorded several of her favorite books onto a tape, and after his surgery, he would take the recorder to her room at night, press play and turn the pages of the book so he could "read."

Sunday Rose would let the tape play for a little while and then she'd hit the stop button. She would look at her dad and say, "I want you to read it," Urban said.

His wife, actress Nicole Kidman, would have to explain to Sunday Rose why daddy couldn't actually read to her.

Urban, whose hits include "You Look Good in My Shirt" "Making Memories of Us" and "Somebody Like You," is fully recovered from his surgery and plans to return to the stage on February 4, when he performs at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. He is also planning a huge benefit for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on April 10.

Huawei Honor Review

Huawei Honor

With a new Android device announced ever hour, it takes a lot to make a device stand out from the crowd. Some devices are marketed heavily, some bring new features and others just fall to the wayside after announcement, and the Huawei Honor is a handset that falls in the middle of a bunch of these categories. Claims of three-day battery life certainly piqued our interest, but we'll have to get this in the States first before we'll celebrate too much. But that didn't slow us down at all. We got the Honor in our hands, and it's time to put it through its paces.

Could the Huawei Honor bring enough to the table to make some folks want to import the device, or to make it a daily driver for those who are able to purchase and make use of it? Let’s hit the break and take a look at how it rates.

The Good

The Huawei Honor offers a solid build quality, large screen, fast processor and a demo ICS ROM already.

The Bad

The self-proclaimed amazing battery life was anything but, and the 8-megapixel camera disappointed. Currently unavailable in the U.S.

Conclusion

The hardware is very well built and the Honor runs rather smoothly. We can expect to see support for ICS on this device since we already saw the demo ROM available, and with multiple colors available the device is sure to meet your style requirements.

Groundbreaking jazz manager John Levy dies at 99 (AP)

ALTADENA, California ? John Levy, the first prominent African-American personal manager in the jazz or pop music field, whose clients included Nancy Wilson and Ramsey Lewis, has died at age 99.

Devra Hall Levy posted on his website that her husband died Friday in his sleep at his home in Altadena, California, less than three months before his 100th birthday.

An accomplished bassist, the New Orleans-born Levy performed with such jazz greats as Stuff Smith, Billie Holiday, Erroll Garner and Billy Taylor in the 1940s before joining pianist George Shearing's original quintet. In the early 1950s, he became Shearing's full-time manager and later went on to form his own management agency, John Levy Enterprises Inc.

Levy's client roster over the years included more than 85 artists, including Wilson, Lewis, Nat and Cannonball Adderley, Betty Carter, Roberta Flack, Herbie Hancock, Shirley Horn, Freddie Hubbard, Ahmad Jamal and Abbey Lincoln as well as comedian Arsenio Hall.

In 2006, the National Endowment for the Arts recognized Levy as a Jazz Master, the nation's highest jazz honor.

How to De-SPAM Your Life [Spam]

How to De-SPAM Your LifeOur lives are filled with spam. It has many names and comes in many forms, from email to snail mail to text messages and more. With the help of technology, as well as some clever thinking, it's not too difficult to filter out all the unwanted crap in your life. Here's how to do it.

This guide covers all kinds of services that are targeted by spam in some fashion. You can read the whole guide, or you can just click on the topic you want from the list below to skip to that section.

Calls

Whether your mobile or landline is plagued by telemarketers or you semi-regularly receive the same unwanted caller, there are a few things you can do to block out phone spammers. We'll take a look at your mobile options first, and then a few things you can do to put a stop to landline spam.

Use Google Voice

How to De-SPAM Your LifeSetting up a Google Voice account is the easiest way to block unwanted calls. Any annoying callers can be blocked quickly and easily via the Google Voice web app. You just log in, find a text message they sent, click the "more" link by that message, and choose "Block caller."

However, blocking calls on your Google Voice number is only useful if that's where you're receiving them. If the calls are coming to your mobile number, you can port that number to Google Voice so you have access to all its services. If you'd rather not hand your number over to Google, or you're also receiving phone spam on your landline, read on for some alternatives.

Use an App

How to De-SPAM Your LifeAndroid users have quite a few options to block unwanted callers, and all are free. Of the bunch, we like DroidBlock because it's simple, it can block specific numbers and unknown callers, and it can send an SMS reply to let spammers know that they're being filtered.

Unfortunately iPhone users must be jailbreak their device in order to use a proper blocking solution, but those who do should check out iBlackList. Although it's a $12 solution, it's extremely comprehensive. Not only can you block calls, but you can even send an automatic text reply to anyone being filtered to make them aware of their fate.

Block Landline Calls with *60

How to De-SPAM Your LifeFor starters, sign up for the official Do Not Call list if you haven't already. It can help significantly, though it doesn't completely prevent telemarketers from calling. Additionally, it does absolutely nothing against other types of calls you want to block on your landline phone.

What you can use, however, is *60. If it isn't already included as a part of your phone service, just call your provider and ask if they offer it. Dialing the *60 code will allow you to enter a number you want to block. When that number calls you, the phone simply will not ring. That's all there is to it.

Text Messages

There are plenty of reasons you might end up with unwanted text messages, whether you've got a creepy stalker or some advertising service got a hold of your number. Nowadays, text message scams are especially popular and you may receive a handful of those as well. Whatever type of spam you're getting, the blocking methods are the same.

Use Google Voice

How to De-SPAM Your LifeLike with calls, setting up a Google Voice account is the easiest way to filter out unwanted text messages. Any offending texters can be blocked quickly and easily via the Google Voice web app. You just log in, find a text message they sent, click the "more" link by that message, and choose "Block caller."

However, blocking text messages on your Google Voice number is only useful if that's where you're receiving them. If the texts are being sent to your mobile phone's number instead, you can port that number to Google Voice so you have access to all its services. If you'd rather not hand your number over to Google, however, read on for some alternatives.

Use an App

How to De-SPAM Your LifeAndroid users have quite a few options to block unwanted texters. Handcent SMS and BlackList are two free filters. PrivacyStar will cost you a few bucks per months, but if their app doesn't successfully block the offending texter you can contact them and they'll take care of the problem for you. (PrivacyStar is also available for BlackBerry.)

Like with calls, iPhone users should check out iBlackList (assuming they've jailbroken their device). Although it's a $12 solution, it's extremely comprehensive. Not only can you block texts, but you can even send an automatic reply to anyone being filtered to make them aware of their fate.

Email

Email spam is a much smaller problem that it used to be, now that most email services have pretty smart algorithms that filter out most of the crap for you. But there's the email known as bacn, which encompasses things like newsletters because they aren't quite spam and yet you still probably don't want them. Additionally, you may want to focus on some email more than others, and even features like Google's Priority Inbox won't always do the job. Here's what will.

Create a Whitelist Filter

How to De-SPAM Your LifeIf your email service or app provides filtering options, you should consider making a whitelist that sorts your email by priority. All you need to do is create a filter that is designed to ignore important messages and leave them in the inbox, but move everything else into a secondary folder (or label, if you're a Gmail user). This way only email senders you've designated as important will show up in your inbox and you can check the secondary folder when you have a bit more time. Whitelists have the disadvantage of being too strict, but since you'll be checking both your primary and now secondary inbox you won't have to worry too much about that. The filter isn't set in stone, either, so you'll be able to update it as needed until it's working great for you.

Get Rid of Newsletters and Ads You Don't Want

How to De-SPAM Your LifeSometimes you sign up for newsletters unintentionally and you find yourself stuck with a bunch of mail you don't want to read. You can get rid of it quickly by doing a quick search for the word "unsubscribe" and creating a filter that automatically deletes emails with that word in it. Of course, that system is imperfect because it's possible?however unlikely?that it will catch a message that's not a newsletter. Alternatively, you can use a service like Unroll.me that's designed to find all the newsletters in your inbox and help you easily unsubscribe without hassle. (Note: This service only works with popular online email providers, not any IMAP inbox, and is currently in closed beta. In the meantime you can sign up for an invite. If you use this link you'll be placed on the priority list.) Gmail users can also employ the Unsubscribe.com button to easily unsubscribe from mailing lists with one click when they want out. It requires more manual work, but gets the job done all the same.

Snail Mail

The majority of the mail you receive in the real world probably consists of catalogs, coupons, and other advertisements you don't really care about. It's not only annoying, but completely wasteful. The best solutions will cost you a little money, but they're worth the small fees. Here's what you can do.

Employ a Junk Mail Blocking Service

How to De-SPAM Your LifeIf you're willing to pay a small fee (generally $20-30) to clean out your physical mailbox, services like Greendimes, 41 Pounds, and Stop the Junk Mail can take care of the problem for you. All you do is provide a information about you and your problem address and the services will make the necessary calls to get you off of junk and grey mail lists. While they won't be able to stop 100% of the unwanted mail you receive, the reduction rates are usually between 85 and 90%. That's a big difference.

Use a Mail Filtering Service

How to De-SPAM Your LifeIf you're really willing to throw some money at the problem?$20 per month, to be exact?you should check out Earth Class Mail. You can forward all your mail to them and they'll put it into their web app so you can view it like email. They'll open and scan your mail by request, or physically mail it to you if you'd prefer. While this won't eliminate the spam in your physical inbox, it'll reduce the recycling process to about two clicks.

Label Your Unwanted Mail

How to De-SPAM Your LifeIf you want to attempt to prevent delivery from certain senders, you can do this the old fashioned way. Simply mark your mail with "RETURN TO SENDER" and leave it for the postman the next day. While this method won't ensure you don't receive mail from certain senders, with persistence it will encourage it. And if you're receiving mail for a former resident, you can simply mark that with "MOVED" instead.

Get Rid of Phonebooks

How to De-SPAM Your LifeNot all unwanted deliveries come from the post office, and one of the worst offenders is the phone book. It requires a lot of paper and ink to print and most of us done need them anymore. Nonetheless, they just keep coming. If you want to stop your phone book delivery, The Daily Green suggests opting out at Yellow Pages Goes Green and the National Yellow Pages Consumer Choice and Opt-Out Site. Unfortunately, opting out on both of those sites won't always do the trick. Some local publishers will not honor those lists and you'll need to call them directly to avoid delivery.

Social Media

The more popular social media becomes, the more it becomes a target for spam. Twitter and Facebook are two popular targets. Here's how to stop unwanted communication on both.

Facebook

How to De-SPAM Your LifeFacebook is actually very good at filtering spam if you're using it the way Zuckerberg intended. If you only friend people you know, your primary Facebook inbox will only contain messages from those people. Any other messages will end up in a secondary inbox. In general, this system works very well but if you can't seem to get rid of a problem "friend" on Facebook you can just block them. You begin by visiting your Privacy Settings page. From there, choose the type of blocking you want. You can add a friend to your Restricted list, which will only allow them to see public updates. (It'll be like they've subscribed to you but aren't really friends with you.) You can also block a user using their name or email address. Additionally, you can block event and app invites if you don't want them. Just fill in the required information for whatever type of blocking you need and you'll be all set.

Twitter

How to De-SPAM Your LifeTwitter doesn't do much to preemptively dispatch spam messages, but you can do a few things to lower your chances of becoming a target and definitely block unwanted senders should they come along. The Social Media Examiner suggests opting out of Twitter promotional services. SocialOomph is a popular one, and you can opt out of their messages by following @optmeout, waiting for @optmeout to automatically follow you back, sending @optmeout a direct message, and then unfollowing @optmeout. Additionally, you can use spam-blocking services to seek out Twitter spammers and rmeove them. StopTweet only requires a quick sign-in to Twitter, a few choices, and it'll remove any spammers it finds that are following you. If you do end up with Twitter spam that opting our or spam-scanning doesn't catch, it's very easy to block the sender manually. Just visit their Twitter page, click the menu with the silhouette of a person, and choose "Block _____." (See the image to the right for an example.)

Humans

It feels cynical to admit to feeling this way, but let's be honest: Sometimes your fellow human beings are the source of unwanted solicitation in real life. You have the power to simply ignore anyone you want?say that person on the street who's handing out "personality tests" that are in reality screening tools for potential candidates in their sleazy cult (this happens all the time in Los Angeles)?but it's not always that easy. If you've got a strip of solicitation-heavy sidewalk you regularly stroll down, something as simple as a pair of headphones can do wonders separating you from the onslaught of IRL spam (and who doesn't love music on a walk?).

Human de-spamming is less a matter of removing the spam?you can't, thankfully, click a button to get rid of another human being?and more a matter of handling, ignoring, or avoiding. A simple set of headphones can go a long way, but if you've got a strong enough constitution to just ignore the person waiving a flyer in your face, that certainly works, as well. Feel free to share what's worked best for your human de-spamming, along with what's worked or hasn't in other spam-filled areas in your life, in the comments.
