Grauman's Chinese: Movie star prints' futures not set in cement

Grauman's Chinese Theatre is hallowed Hollywood tourist ground, the famed site where silver-screen stars such as Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra literally cemented their legends by making hand- and footprints in concrete. On a recent November morning, those movie icons were joined by three gigantic rodents: Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Or, more precisely, as Alvin, Simon and Theodore are cartoon characters, by three anonymous guys in chipmunk suits who stuck their "paws" in wet cement while their squeaky, high-pitched version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" blared over the sound system. Some of the goop stuck to Theodore's belly fur.

The pace of paw and other print-making at Grauman's has taken off in recent months. The complex has hosted 11 ceremonies so far this year for actors including Robert Duvall, Jennifer Aniston, Mickey Rourke and the young cast of the "Twilight" movies ? Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart. Kobe Bryant, French DJ David Guetta and the Smurfs also have dipped their digits in cement.

That's the largest number of ceremonies the theater has held since its opening in 1927, when nine individuals put their prints in cement. The influx has raised concern among some film buffs, who believe that Lautner's cinematic oeuvre doesn't exactly compare to, say, John Barrymore's or Jack Nicholson's. And with limited space available in the forecourt, some say the theater owners should be pickier about who they allow into the landmark.

Donald Kushner, a movie producer who bought the legendary theater with entrepreneur Elie Samaha in May from Warner Bros. and Viacom Inc., acknowledged that the theater has been holding more ceremonies ? which are paid for by movie studios and cost tens of thousands of dollars. Some of the older prints are deteriorating, he said, and will have to be removed from the forecourt to be preserved. But he added that not all the new prints are getting prime real estate in front of the theater, so don't look for the Chipmunks or the Smurfs there.

"They're not going in the forecourt. They weren't real ceremonies ? they were mock ceremonies," said Kushner. Though he said he was still uncertain where the blocks would end up, he surmised that all of the "kids' stuff" would be displayed at the Chinese 6 theaters, located in the adjacent Hollywood & Highland mall complex and operated by Kushner and Samaha.

Plans also are in the works to relight the forecourt and restore old theater signs to resemble their 1930s appearance. The theater is also trying to entice movie studios to hold after-parties for their premieres in the lobby of the Chinese 6, hiding the concession stands with curtains and bringing in other decorative elements to transform it into what owners describe as a "ballroom." (Many premieres are already held at Grauman's, but the after-parties are typically staged at nearby restaurants or hotels.)

Kushner also said he wants to broaden the range of individuals the theater pays tribute to in the forecourt to include athletes and musicians. He revealed that Grauman's is in preliminary talks with boxer Muhammad Ali and is also speaking with the family of Michael Jackson about a square that could use the imprints of a shoe and glove the pop star donned in some of his music videos.

Currently, forecourt honorees are selected by a committee made up of the theater's executives who evaluate "the impact someone has had on cinematic history and how they have contributed to cinema today," said the cinema's director of operations, Alwyn Kushner, daughter of Donald Kushner. Still, most of the ceremonies seem to be tied to the release of an honoree's new film ? Rourke, for one, got his square less than two weeks before the November opening of "Immortals," a sword-and-sandals epic in which he starred. His tablet, along with Aniston's July imprint and a November block stamped by some "West Side Story" 1961 film cast members, have yet to be placed in the forecourt.

"It has nothing to do with who is an authentic, for-the-ages star," said Richard Schickel, a film critic and movie historian. "That has deteriorated. It's obviously driven entirely by what is hot at this moment, publicity and money. I guess it's kinda nice, but it's not the ultimate accolade for a movie actor."

Studios are willing to cough up the dough for the ceremonies ? $25,000 for "cement and labor" directly to Grauman's, plus around $20,000 to cover costs of the ceremony, according to an executive familiar with the process who requested anonymity to preserve relations with the theater ? because they feel the event carries strong promotional value.

"We used it as the kickoff for our advertising campaign and all of the public appearances," said Nancy Kirkpatrick, president of worldwide marketing for Summit Entertainment, which released "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1" last month. "It's absolutely a big deal, and we knew the fans would be excited to go there and visit the actors' squares."

Donald Kushner insisted that the ceremonies are not a "real big revenue source, but are good for the Grauman's brand and tradition." The company that handles publicity for the theater boasted in a recent press kit that the November print ceremonies and AFI Film Festival ? also held at Grauman's ? resulted in "over 15 million TV hits" and "$3.5 million publicity value" in one week.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame, which runs up and down the city sidewalk near Grauman's and is run by the nonprofit Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, charges $30,000 for its honors. About two dozen terrazzo stars with a famous person's name are installed each year. The selection committee is composed of 36 entertainment industry professionals.

Grauman's began the practice of having public figures leave their prints in 1927, when silent-film star Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped into wet cement. Sid Grauman saw a business opportunity in the mishap and decided to ask the theater's principal investors ? of which Talmadge was one ? to follow in the tradition. Soon, studios began paying to be included as well. There are about 200 squares currently in the forecourt.

"Basically, it was all the important stars in the films of the time until 1960, when things changed dramatically and they started bringing in more modern, younger stars," explained Marc Wanamaker, a Hollywood film historian and photo archivist. He noted that with each generation, there's been chatter about whether certain inductees are worthy of a square. "There's been controversy with purists saying, 'How dare you put Tom Cruise next to Marilyn Monroe?'"

Kushner says the theater will need to begin taking out some imprints in the near future. "Some of the handprints are going to have to be removed so we can preserve them," he said. "Some of them, like Groucho Marx, have almost disappeared."

Asked if permanent or even temporary removal might upset some of the honorees, their families or fans, Kushner replied: "Whatever. In three or four years, those squares won't exist anyway, because they're disintegrating. They'll eventually find their place."

A match that we looked in control of for the entire 90 minutes. At half time with the match still at 0-0, it just looked like a matter of time before we opened the scoring. And on the 54th minute Gareth Bale steps up. Ade receives the ball in the box and tries to work himself some space for a shot, but instead opts for a pass to Bale who controls and puts the ball under the outstretched flailing hand of Ruddy. US teen killed in Mexico heading to see girlfriend (AP)

MORELIA, Mexico ? An American teenager who was found dead on Christmas Eve in Mexico had gone to see his girlfriend the day he died and didn't tell relatives, perhaps fearing they wouldn't let him go, according to Mexican prosecutors' documents obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.

The charred remains of 18-year-old Alexis Uriel Marron of Rolling Meadows, Illinois were found along with the bodies of two friends in the trunk of a burned-out car in the western state of Michoacan. The car belonged to one of the friends.

Two uncles identified Marron through crowns on his teeth and clothing that hadn't burned, the documents said.

The prosecutors' office said the car holding the remains of the three young men was found Saturday on the side of a rural road in Michoacan, a Mexican state that has been plagued in recent years by violence linked to Mexico's drug trafficking trade.

Prosecutors were looking into robbery as a possible motive because none of the three men's possessions were found in the car. But the area has also been the scene of bloody turf battles between drug gangs. The Knights Templar and Jalisco New Generation cartels are believed to be active in the area.

Marron was a U.S. citizen, according to the documents, but his family was from a town in the area called Quiringuicharo. The relatives said Marron, a suburban Chicago high school student, arrived in Mexico on Dec. 3 to celebrate the year-end holidays and was staying with an uncle.

He left the house on Dec. 23, wearing a blue checked shirt, with the intention of visiting his girlfriend, who lived in the neighboring state of Jalisco. Another uncle said he called Marron Friday afternoon to tell him to collect money his father had sent him from the U.S.

Marron replied that he was on the road, and the signal was bad, according to the documents.

When he hadn't returned later in the evening, the family began to worry.

"I thought that he had gone without telling us for fear that we wouldn't give him permission," Jose Avalos Reyes, one of the uncles, told prosecutors.

The cousin of one of the other victims said he called Marron's girlfriend. She told him she had been expecting him and his friends but they had never arrived.

Family members reported the disappearances to local authorities and the charred remains were discovered the next day. The uncles told prosecutors that Marron did not do drugs.

Word of the death spread quickly to the Chicago area, which has a large population of Mexicans and Mexican Americans with roots in Michoacan. Family members were shocked, calling him a good kid.

Friends set up two memorial Facebook pages, a YouTube picture tribute and held a memorial Tuesday evening. Dozens attended in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect. They carried candles, flowers and balloons. Some quietly prayed in Spanish.

He was remembered as an athlete, a positive person who was always smiling and loved spending time with family.

Marron's cousin, Daniela Zendejas, told reporters that she considered him to be a brother. "He loved his nieces. And he didn't have time to get to one of them, to see her grow," she told reporters. "And now he's gone."

Another memorial was planned for next week when students were scheduled to return after the holiday break to Rolling Meadows High School, where Marron was a student. They were urged to wear red, Marron's favorite color.

"Wear red to remember our friend ... RIP Alexis Marron," one of the Facebook tributes read. "We are also all meeting out by his locker in the morning, bring pictures if you'd like or post notes or anything you'd like on his locker. We will all come together in remembrance..."

The U.S. State Department said the agency was working with U.S. Embassy officials to get more information. Mexican Consulate officials in Chicago said they were aware of reports of Marron's death and were ready to help family if requested.

The other two victims were identified as Mexican men aged 21 and 24. All three were from, or had family in Quiringuicharo.

Earlier in December, two other bodies were found in a burned-out vehicle on the same stretch of road. The victims have been identified as two Mexico City residents, but there was no immediate information on the motive in those killings either.

Why the NFL Needs a Concussion Referee (Time.com)

The NFL has recently taken important steps to keep its players safer: from harsher penalties for helmet-to-helmet hits to stricter return-to-play guidelines, to now, the appointment of an independent athletic trainer to sit up in the press box and spot players who might be suffering the symptoms of a concussion or other injuries on the field.

These solutions are commendable. But they still fall short. To make certain that players are fully protected, the NFL should give these new trainers a referees shirt and let them make the calls that save a player down the road. (See photos of NFL players return to training after a lockout.)

During the Dec. 8 nationally televised Thursday night game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy absorbed a stinging helmet-to-helmet hit from Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison, one of the most vocal critics of new NFL safety rules. (For the McCoy hit, Harrison, who has previously been fined for other hits, was suspended for a game.) But because McCoy did not immediately show concussion symptoms, and Browns trainers and doctors were attending to other players on the sideline and claimed they did not see the violent blow, he was not tested for a concussion, and returned to the game two plays later. By the next day, McCoy was in fact diagnosed with a concussion, and he missed last week's game; he still has not been cleared to practice, and he'll sit out Cleveland's Week 16 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

In response to this embarrassing incident, the NFL implemented a new policy this week that places a certified athletic trainer in the press box. The trainer, who won't be affiliated with either team playing in the game, will have access to video replay to better pick out players who might be woozy or showing other concussion symptoms. This vantage point gives this trainer a huge advantage for monitoring injuries: it's hard to see everything from the sideline. This new policy also gives the trainers direct lines of communication to both sidelines, so they can advise team medical staffs.

This independent trainer, however, needs to be more than a consultant. The new NFL policy states: this individual will not diagnose or prescribe treatment, nor have any authority to direct that a player be removed from the game. But why not make these trainers a kind of concussion referee, replete with the black-and-white striped shirt and give them power to order injured players to the sideline, to at least be tested for a concussion? Let them wave the concussion flag. Aren't head injuries as serious as holding? (See the top 10 sports moments of 2011.)

Take it a step further. Once a player is ordered to the sideline, why not also have a neurologist down on the field, unaffiliated with either team, diagnosing concussion symptoms and ordering that dinged-up players be benched. And why shouldn't they also have zebra stripes to send the message: they have the authority to make the right call. One more step: Why shouldn't there be a neurologist in the press box as well? No offense to certified athletic trainers, many of whom are quite qualified to pinpoint concussion symptoms. But neurologists are specialists, and an extra set of eyes can only help.

These measures aren't a condemnation of current team medical staffs. They are doing a better job than ever of pinpointing concussed players, diagnosing the injuries and keeping players out of games in line with NFL rules. But let's be honest ? these doctors and trainers are inherently conflicted, possibly subconsciously biased, since they work with team personnel whose livelihoods depend on playing, and winning. And you would hope that under the new NFL rule on the books, team personnel will follow the recommendation of the press-box trainer to remove players. But as the McCoy incident shows, costly slipups can happen.

Such a new layer of security further reduces safety risks, and both the NFL and its players need maximum protection. On Thursday former NFL players Jamal Lewis, Dorsey Levens, Fulton Kuykendall and Ryan Stewart filed a federal lawsuit against the NFL, claiming that before last year, the NFL tried to hide the concussion problem and mislead players about concussion risks. Brain injuries, these players say, have caused postcareer medical issues. Any allegation that the NFL intentionally sought to mislead players has no merit, the NFL responded in a statement. (Read "Head Cases: NFL to Add Concussion-Only Trainers to Games.")

When asked about the possibility of a concussion ref, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded in an e-mail: "We will continue to review our procedures and make any changes that would be beneficial. Our medical advisors are not recommending your proposal. Our team medical staffs are removing players from games when they are diagnosed with concussions, and they are not returning to play until they are medically cleared. " Dr. Robert Cantu, co-director of Boston University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy and one of the world's leading concussion experts, is commending the NFL on its latest step but agrees that it's not ideal. He's disappointed, according to Aiello, that the press-box trainer will not have authority to send players to the sidelines for an assessment. "If it's simply another set of eyes, it's not as a big a step as I thought," says Cantu. The NFL has done a really good job of trying to rectify weaknesses. Is this as good as a neurologist on the sideline? No. But you can understand why the NFL would be taking incremental steps.

We hope the next one comes before another Colt McCoy.

Nintendo 3DS news roundup: early 2012 lineup revealed, DLC coming, sales exceed 4 million in Japan (Digital Trends)

?

Nintendo-3DSWe?ve been a little light on Nintendo 3DS news lately, but things continue to look up for the once struggling handheld. Sources report that Nintendo will offer downloadable content (DLC) for the first time in 2012, hardware sales have eclipsed 4 million units in Japan, and Satoru Iwata has revealed Nintendo?s upcoming game lineup for early 2012.

DLC coming to Fire Emblem:?Nintendo added support for DLC within games in a system update earlier this year, but no games have been released that take advantage of the new functionality. That will soon change. According to Nikkei (via 1UP), Fire Emblem for 3DS will have some form of downloadable content in March. Third parties are expected to begin bringing paid DLC content to 3DS titles by summer. Wii U will also have paid DLC support.

3DS sales exceed 4 million in Japan: Enterbrain (via Famitsu) reports that Nintendo 3DS sales in Japan have exceeded 4 million units in only 10 months. The Nintendo DS, by comparison, reached 5 million units in its first 13 months, but it had two holiday seasons to boost those sales. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have each sold more than 1 million copies.?

3DS 2012 Japan lineup: Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave a direct broadcast over UStream the other day, where he revealed a few details about upcoming games, like Fire Emblem. Below is a list of games coming to the 3DS (in Japan) in the next few months.?

  • Ghost Camera ? Jan. 12
  • Ace Combat 3D ? Jan. 12
  • Rhythm Thief R ? Jan. 19
  • Beyond the Labyrinth ? Jan. 19
  • Resident Evil Revelations ? Jan. 26
  • Tekken 3D Prime Edition ? Feb. 16
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy ? Feb. 16
  • Harvest Moon: Hajimari no Daichi ? Feb. 23
  • New Love Plus ? Feb 24
  • Mario & Sonic at London Olympics ? March 1
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D ? March 8
  • Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai ? March 8
  • Girl?s RPG (by Level-5) ? March 8
  • Dynasty Warriors VS ? March 15
  • Kid Icarus Uprising ? March 22
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening ? April 19

Not a bad lineup. Let?s hope the US release list is as robust. Do any of these games look good? I?m intrigued by a new Harvest Moon, though the series has been getting repetitive in recent years.?

Why Windows Phone 7 is losing

Windows Phone 7
Photo: handy2day / Flickr

Charlie Kindel, a former Windows Phone GM, wrote a post explaining the reasons he believed were behind Windows Phone 7?s continued struggles in sales even though ? according to him ? it was a superior platform to Google?s mobile OS. He says it all comes down to control ? and that is what has limited WP7?s sales potential to date.

Kindel?s reasoning

Kindel explains that there are four primary sides of the mobile market ? the users, the OS providers, the device manufacturers and the mobile carriers. He explains that they all own and control different parts of the market, while in conflict in other parts. He explains that where Google gives the device manufacturer and the carrier control ? leading to more Android devices being made and carrier retail sales people punting Android phones ? Microsoft restricts this control, meaning manufacturers and carriers support it less. In turn users do not have the devices marketed to them by the carriers, hence Microsoft?s week sales position.

What this means

Charlie Kindel explains that this means that Windows Phone 7 is able to provide a superior end user experience, though it comes with a price. ?This is why, despite being a superior PRODUCT to Android, Windows Phone has not sold as well.? Spending marketing dollars on advertising Android devices is and easy decision for the carriers. Pushing RSPs to push Android is easy,? he writes.

In the long run, he believes this model ? putting users first ? could trump over Google?s ?do what you will approach?, which he says has resulted in the platform becoming extremely fragmented.

A comeback unlikely?

Tech writer turned venture capitalist MG Siegler says that, even if WP7 is marginally better than Android or iOS, it?s not enough, especially given how late to market it is. ?Two to three years in the hole, the only way Windows Phone can win the market now is to make a product that is leaps and bounds better than what?s out there. They need something that?s an iPhone-in-2007 type product. The product they have, while good, isn?t that,? Siegler writes.

The Windows Phone 7 sales problem has been on my mind for some time now. The mobile OS platform is, in my view, at least on par with Google?s Android, if not superior. What?s for certain is Android OS isn?t manifold better warranting the major sales gap between the two platforms. So what then is Microsoft to do to mitigate their current sales problem?

Kindel does a good job outlining how, in simple terms, the mobile devices market is structured. His argument for Windows Phone 7 sales issues is well articulated, but the proactive steps the WP7 team need to take to kick start sales outside of throwing money at the problem and waiting is not explained at all.

There is no comparing Paul and Santorum, said Savage, because Paul is a leave-us-alone libertarian. ?Ron is older than my father, far less toxic than Santorum, and, as he isn't beloved of religious conservatives, he isn't out there stoking the hatreds of our social and political enemies,? he explained. ?And Ron may not like gay people, and may not want to hang out with us or use our toilets, but he's content to leave us the fuck alone and recognizes that gay citizens are entitled to the same rights as all other citizens. Santorum, on the other hand, believes that his bigotry must be given the force of law. That's an important difference.?

Japan nuclear crisis response was confused and blighted by poor communication

The report highlights that fact that Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the plant, the Nuclear Industrial and Safety Agency and the Japanese government even failed to appreciate the scale of any potential disaster as the plant was only designed to withstand a tsunami of 20 feet.

The report pointedly criticised the operators for using the term "outside our imagination" for the events of March 11 in an effort to avoid responsibility. By describing the crisis as beyond what might have been considered possible, the company had brought public distrust on itself and the nuclear industry.

There were no systematic procedures to follow and staff at the plant failed to communicate with colleagues at the site, their headquarters and the government.

Workers also failed to realise that coolant water to the reactors had been disrupted, despite warning indicators that the nuclear cores were melting down.

The government also came in for strong criticism for failing to release information to the public and for using "evasive" language to avoid confirming that the reactors had melted down.

Failure to disclose data also meant that people living close to the plant were exposed to radiation instead of being evacuated.

The full report is scheduled to be completed next summer and will highlight a host of other failures ? from insufficient batteries for mobile phones within the plant to confusion in the government because two teams set up to handle the crisis in Tokyo were not communicating.

Google?s Eric Schmidt: The Internet and mobile can ?change the world?

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt has spoken about how he believes technology can change the world by bringing greater information, transparency and values to Internet users across the planet.

Speaking at The Economic Club of Washington?s event yesterday, broadcast by C-Span, Schmidt opened by stating that technology, and the Internet in particular, is an enabler that can help people push themselves forward:

All of us would agree that people can search for their dreams, they should be able to?archive?what they really want.

Government and citizens

Schmidt spoke of the emergence of two rival systems which are being brought together by the Internet: offline institutions ? such as government, politics and law ? and cyberspace.

They are getting into conflict in some governments and places, as technology is empowering people in ways they have never been empowered before. You can think of this as a community of citizens and a community of?governments.

As technology develops and time passes, Schmidt believes that ?a new equilibrium will emerge? to serve both communities in different ways. Cyberspace, he says, will ultimately serve to keep governments more honest in many ways, while equally government will have influence on the negative things that happen in cyberspace.

Companies changing the world

Schmidt continued on to look at exactly how the Internet and leading tech companies are helping to improve live across the world, saying:

Technology is at a point where we are ?seeing emergence of global scaled platforms, that are impressive in their reach, with a chance to change the world.

He specifically identified four companies ? Google (of course), Apple, Facebook and Amazon ? as those which have platforms that are impacting political and business systems across the world.

Construction of these systems is the probably most important business today. The combined market value of these corporations is very high, but they are just beginning. Within 10 yeas, computers will be 30 times faster?which will allow us to do amazing things.

The Google chief firmly believes that the Internet can make an unprecedented difference across the whole world:

My view, is that we should be very?optimistic?about all of this. The world isn?t perfect but it is going to a much safer and more informed place. The things that [the US] can bring to the world really will change a lot of these countries and lift people out of financial poverty, and information poverty.

Schmidt highlighted the captive market for these changes by pointing out that, in some countries, people are placing greater priority on having a mobile phone than getting running water at home.

Personal super computer

Speaking about the future, Schmidt is optimistic that computers and artificial intelligence will not take over the world. Instead he believes that a complimentary scenario will emerge:

Over five to ten years, human and computers will be distinguishable. Humans will still be very good at what we do ? intuition, fun, entertainment, innovation ? and computers will get?extraordinarily?good about what they are very good at, such as needle in a haystack problems and infinite memories.

Schmidt believes that the value of mobile devices is the networks of information that they are connected to, rather than the device itself:

I don?t think of this as my phone, it is my personal super computer that can answer any question that I care about in life.

Tablets and mobile devices are often referred to as points of access, and Google is continuing to invest it its network, having recently broken ground on two new data center in Asia, amongst many of its other projects.

Company sues former employee over Twitter followers

Noah Kravitz, of Oakland, California, worked as a product reviewer and video blogger for South Carolina-based PhoneDog from 2006 to 2010, according to the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for Northern California.

Kravitz told the New York Times that he had left PhoneDog on good terms with an agreement that he would "tweet on their behalf from time to time".

Eight months later, however, the company filed suit against him, a move Kravitz told the newspaper was retaliation for his claim to 15 per cent of PhoneDog's gross advertising revenue.

In a statement to the Times, the company said: "The costs and resources invested by PhoneDog Media into growing its followers, fans and general brand awareness through social media are substantial and are considered property of PhoneDog Media.

"We intend to aggressively protect our customer lists and confidential information, intellectual property, trademark and brands," it said.

Henry Cittone, an intellectual property lawyer, told the Times the case will "establish precedent in the online world, as it relates to ownership of social media accounts.

"We've actually been waiting to see such a case as many of our clients are concerned about the ownership of social media accounts vis-?-vis their branding," Cittone said.

Halliburton And Schlumberger Will Benefit From An Increase In Oil Majors' Capital Expenditures

Recently, TheStreet.com dubbed Halliburton (HAL) 'The Most Mispriced Energy Stock of 2011.' The article blames a "Macondo overhang,...fears of pricing weakness,...and a [projected] BRIC slowdown" in 2012 for the underperformance of Halliburton's shares. These concerns seem largely overblown. As for the Macondo issue, there is certainly a real risk that Halliburton may be forced into a large settlement, but S&P does not believe a ruling on the matter is imminent. Regarding a slowdown in the BRIC countries, the article notes that Argus Research believes a review of big oil's capital expenditure plans should be enough to dispel the notion that an economic slowdown in China or Brazil will derail oilfield service companies in 2012.

This is consistent with S&P's outlook for the oil and gas equipment and services sub-industry. In its stock report on Halliburton, S&P says it expects "higher upstream capex...combined with higher global demand" in the coming year. There are multiple examples of big oil's plan to increase spending in 2012. On December 2, Conoco Phillips (COP) announced it was increasing 2012 planned capex to $15.5 billion from a previous estimate of around $14.5 billion. The new estimate represents a 15% increase from 2011. In a sign of how the industry is recovering since oil prices crashed to around $30 in the wake of 2008's financial crisis, Conoco's 2012 spending plan "mark[s] a return to the level of investment the company had before 2009, when it slashed its spending plans by 40%" according to the Wall Street Journal.

Also, Conoco said "the bulk of [its] exploration and production capital program will be spent in North America," where Halliburton maintains a leadership position. Chevron (CVX) also plans to increase capex in 2012. The second-largest U.S. oil company said it expects to increase spending by 17% next year to $32.7 billion, a record for the company, while Exxon (XOM), the largest U.S. oil company, is expected to increase spending by 5% next year according to MarketWatch.

Going forward, the European situation poses a significant risk for oil companies. Should the ECB's Long Term Refinancing Operations fail to spur investment in distressed sovereign debt, Italy and Spain could find themselves unable to access the bond market, causing them to seek a bailout from the IMF. This would likely spark a recession in Europe that could be deep enough to cause significant demand destruction for oil, thus putting downward pressure on prices. Thus far, Europe has navigated the crisis reasonably well--to date, the region's leaders have managed to avert a 'Lehman event'. The likely scenario is that Europe will manage to limp through the crisis without anything going disastrously wrong.

Additionally, geopolitical factors, such as Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, should counterbalance recessionary fears in Europe. Furthermore, Forbes notes that JP Morgan's commodities research team is predicting that "as a result of producers rebalancing supply and demand," oil prices should remain resilient in 2012, while "past recessions and the price movement of oil [indicate] the floor [for Brent] seems to be in the $80 to $95 a barrel range." The aforementioned Forbes article cites JP Morgan as predicting a 2012 average of $115 for Brent. This bodes well for oil field services companies as "oil and gas companies in aggregate [are] basing 2012 capital spending budgets on an average oil price of $87 WTI and $98 Brent," according to Barclays. This means prices have some leeway to drop before the capex budgets of the oil majors would be affected.

Given that increased capex expenditures should support oilfield service companies in 2012, the question remains: Why Halliburton and not Schlumberger (SLB)? For starters, Halliburton maintains a leadership position in North America. This is good in the current environment given that, according to Barclays, "supermajors will increase spending by 25% in North America [and only] 10% internationally"--Schlumberger derives nearly 73% of its income outside North America. Additionally, Schlumberger is more expensive in both absolute terms and in terms of its earnings multiple. Schlumberger trades for around 14 times forward earnings--shares of Halliburton trade hands for around 8.14 times analysts' consensus estimate of $4.15 for 2012.

Also, Halliburton's trailing twelve month price-to-sales and price-to-cash flow are well below Schlumberger's, and the two companies' trailing twelve month gross margins, operating margins and net profit margins are very similar. All-in-all then, both Schlumberger and Halliburton are poised to benefit from increased capex by oil and gas companies in 2012, but Halliburton seems to be a better value from a valuation perspective. Now seems like a good time to buy, with HAL shares trading around $34.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in HAL, SLB over the next 72 hours.

Sony To Sell LCD Venture Stake To Samsung For $940 Mn

Sony Corp has agreed to sell its nearly 50 per cent stake in an LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to the South Korean company for $940 million, as it struggles to reduce huge losses at its TV business.

The seven-year-old venture cut its capital by 15 percent in July and industry sources had said Sony was negotiating an exit, aiming to switch to cheaper outsourcing for flat screens for its TVs while Samsung pushes ahead with next-generation displays.

"In terms of direction it is a positive (for Sony)," said Keita Wakabayashi, an analyst at Mito Securities in Tokyo, about the deal. "But if they are making a loss on the sale, one could ask why they didn't make this decision sooner."

"Their biggest problem is that they are not making a profit even though they don't have many plants," he said.

In November, Sony, the world's third largest flat panel TV maker, warned of a fourth straight year of net losses for the financial year to next March, with its TV unit alone set to lose $2.2 billion on tumbling demand and a surging yen.

The company said on Monday it would review its earnings forecast to reflect 66 billion yen in impairment losses from the transaction, as well as expected future cost savings.

While the sale is seen as a move in the right direction for Sony, it will not be good for Samsung, analysts said.

"Sony may shift to Taiwanese LCD makers should they offer cheaper prices," Song Myung-sup, an analyst at HI Investment & Securities, said in Seoul.

Shares in Sony ended 1.6 per cent higher, compared with a 1 per cent gain in Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average .N225, while Samsung Electronics shares fell 0.2 per cent.

Sony's panel venture with Samsung, S-LCD, was established to secure stable supplies for Sony's flat-screen TVs at a time of shortages.

Ailing Business
Once a symbol of Japan's high-tech might, Sony has sold off TV factories in Spain, Slovakia and Mexico in the past few years and outsources more than half of its production to companies including Hon Hai Precision Industry (2317.TW), the contract electronics maker that also counts iPhone maker Apple Inc (AAPL.O) as a key customer.

Sony retains four TV plants of its own -- in Japan, Brazil, China and Malaysia.

Some analysts say the $100 billion LCD TV market peaked last year and forecast it will shrink 3 to 4 percent annually, as consumers in advanced countries have already traded in their bulky cathode-ray tube TV sets for flat screens, while the LCD market has been in a glut since last summer.

Global TV manufacturers are restructuring their businesses and outsourcing production as cut-throat competition and weak demand squeeze margins.

Analysts have criticised Sony for failing to aggressively take on the competition in the TV market from South Korean rivals Samsung and LG Electronics Inc (066570.KS), the largest and second-largest players, respectively.

In November, Sony cut its TV unit sales forecast for the second time this year and dropped a plan to boost its TV sales to 40 million sets a year in the fiscal year ending March 2013, effectively conceding defeat to Samsung, the world's largest flat-panel TV maker.

Samsung has said it expects the flat-panel TV market to grow 10 percent next year, and aims to outperform the market.

Sony said in April it would not raise its stake in a separate LCD venture with Sharp Corp (6753.T) for at least a year, and in August said it would merge its loss-making small-panel business with the government-backed Japan Display.

In October, it signalled a stepped-up push into the smartphone market by announcing it would take control of its mobile phone joint venture with Ericsson (ERICb.ST) for $1.5 billion.

The company is hoping to exploit its music and video content and compatibility with its other devices like TVs and tablet computers to help it catch up with smartphone leaders such as Apple.
